CHAPTER 24

Over the next couple of days Maggie and Ross heard nothing from John Barrow or his assistant about any cancellations. Maggie decided to call his office to check for herself. No one had cancelled. It appeared they would have to wait until the following Thursday. Maggie was disappointed. She hadn’t heard anything from Melanie on the adoption process either.

When Ross’s Wednesday afternoon off rolled around, he and Maggie decided to make a trip back to Bromley. They would go to the woman’s home they had spoken with on the last trip and see what more they could learn from her. Once they gathered all their information and checked it out, Maggie had decided she would go to Lindsay with what she had learned.

As agreed, Caroline and Charlie would pick the children up from playschool and watch them until their parents returned. They knew Maggie and Ross’s destination but vowed to keep their secret. Even one slip of the tongue in Serenity could result in half the town knowing what was going on. And both were relieved to know the situation was being checked out by someone who cared about Lindsay. They felt if anyone could get to the bottom of the mystery of Tom Cullen, Maggie could. People seemed to find it easy to confide in her.

… There was very little traffic on the road Wednesday afternoon and Ross and Maggie reached Bromley in good time. They drove through town and headed straight for Birch Lane. They drove to the second house from the end on the right. Ross pulled into the driveway and Maggie got out, ascended the front steps and rang the doorbell. She waited then rang the bell several more times before turning to leave. She was half-way down the steps when the front door opened partially, then wider and an elderly lady said, “Can I help you, Miss?”

Maggie turned back to see the woman she had met at the mailbox previously. She was wearing a flowered housecoat and blue slippers.

“Yes. Hello. Do you remember me? I’m Margaret. We spoke a few weeks ago at your mailbox. I was hoping you could answer a few more questions for me about your neighbors.”

The woman appeared quite serious as she peered at Maggie. She reached into her pocket, removed a pair of glasses and put them on. Then her face relaxed into a smile. “Sure, I remember you, honey. You were looking for the man who’s a house guest next door sometimes.”

“Yes. That’s right. He’s a good friend of a friend of ours. She wanted us to contact him. We thought maybe the neighbors could help us. I wondered if you could tell me the name of your neighbors and where they work. It’s really quite important.” Maggie didn’t like to be untruthful, but she was convinced it was a necessity in this case.

“I thought I told you their names before… but maybe not. Daniel and Evelyn Anderson. They own and operate a small private nursing home about six miles from here.
