THE FOLLOWING DAYS FLEW BY, and Ashley suspected the photographer, Blair, had a thing for Val. It was apparent in how the petite, blonde bombshell interacted with him: a touch to his arm here or there, bubbling over with laughter at every witty remark he made. The invitation was as plain as the woman’s enhanced double-Ds. Ashley found herself grinding her teeth on more than one occasion when Mia got a little too friendly for her peace of mind. Val took it in stride, never focusing his attention on any one person, instead being friendly to everyone in turn.

When Val informed Ashley that he now understood she hadn’t been kidding when she’d told him photoshoots could be grueling, she laughed. Ten-hour days of smiling until her face hurt, along with holding positions for endless minutes at a time, took its toll on the body. She was sure happy to have a whirlpool tub in her hotel suite for soaking after a tiring day.

A check of her watch showed it was almost time for the final scene. The sun would be setting soon, framing the candlelight dinner setting perfectly. Then it was time to cut loose. The crew would be heading to the Spigot for a celebration. Ashley would stay for one drink, but afterwards, when she went back to the Napa Grand, she was going to spend at least an hour in her tub.

The crew stood around impatiently waiting for the right moment. A few mumbles went out around her, and one particular conversation caught her attention.

“Yeah, if Blair wasn’t trying to bag Fiore, we’d have been done yesterday.”

A snigger sounded. “Do you suppose that’s where they are now?”

“Probably. I saw her leading him down by the bottling shed. I’m sure it was a pretext on her part to get him alone again.”

“The dude’s either tapping that, or he’s oblivious. And he doesn’t strike me as the oblivious type.”

Their words trailed off as they strolled away. They hadn’t noticed the shocked woman they left in their wake. Needing to see for herself, if only to finally come to grips with the fact that Val wanted nothing to do with her, Ashley headed toward the bottling shed.

Voices drew her around the corner toward the back of the building. She recognized Val’s deep voice at once. “We should get back. I’m sure the crew’s ready to wrap this little project up.”

“We have time,” Blair purred.

A shuffling sound had her hurrying around the side of the shed. What she saw froze her in her tracks. Blair was pressed fully against Val’s chest, her arms were entwined around his neck. Val, in turn, had his hands resting on Blair’s hips as if to pull her close. Nausea and anger warred for dominance. Only four days before, Val had been kissing her up against the truck and trying to make out with her on the beach. Granted he didn’t owe her anything.
