“Why am I not surprised you screwed this up?” Matthews said into the phone, his voice at the edge of restraint.

“I didn’t screw anything up,” Jon said.

“You can’t bring your personal life into the job.”

“Why don’t you believe me? She’s not good for this part of the mission, Doug.”

“After all my concerted efforts, you still have no understanding of how authority works. This is not your decision and you certainly shouldn’t have said anything to Dr. Lavi.” A deep sigh, then, “The CIA and I have given the okay for you to go back to Prague.”

“That’s good news.”

“I don’t like getting angry calls from the Mossad, Jon.” He paused. “But this time you win. Dr. Lavi will sit this one out. But, from now on, be nice to her and no more playing director. Got it?”

Jon stayed silent.

“Got it?” Matthews yelled.

“Fine.”

Matthews hung up before Jon had a chance to beat him to it.
