Chapter Eleven

Law and Order

“I’ll need to leave early today, sir,” Dan said, peering in through the open doorway to Mr. Doil’s office the following Monday.

The weekend had been, thankfully, rather uneventful. Dan had had both days off considering he’d worked straight weekends for months. Micky had had his Saturday shift, under the supervision of Gareth, but the time had mostly been spent at Dan’s parents’ with Micky and Flynn and attempting to ignore the impending doom of today. Monday.

“I’m sorry, Daniel?” Mr. Doil replied. He glanced up over his computer screen and furrowed his brow.

“I’m going to need to leave a little early today. Prior engagement. I’ve checked with Gareth and he’s okay to come in a bit early and cover my sections. Just thought I better let you know. Wasn’t here over the weekend.” Dan tapped the door frame, indicating the end to the information being offered and started his descent to leave it at that.

“Daniel?” Mr. Doil called and Dan stopped his eager bolt to turn back, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. He knew this would provoke something. It probably wouldn’t have prior to his outburst after the break-in incident where he offered his boss far too much information as to what he and Micky were doing at the time of the Morgan’s burglary. He suspected Mr. Doil wasn’t quite over that yet.

“Yes, sir?” Dan asked, raising his eyebrows as if welcoming further conversation, even though he really didn’t.

“Which prior engagement is this you speak of?” Mr. Doil asked, peering at Dan over his glasses. He shifted around in his seat so he wasn’t masked by the computer screen he had been intent on staring at and rested his hands on his desk top. “As far as I am aware, you have already booked all your annual leave.”

“I know, sir. This is something unexpected that I need to attend,” Dan replied. “Like I say, sections are all covered by Gareth and I’ve done enough overtime these past few months that the time is made up. I’ve put it all through HR.” So there, he added internally, along with the mental image of a childish tongue poking out of his mouth.

“Hmm,” Mr. Doil began, rubbing at his chin. “I’m not sure I can grant this without knowing what it is that’s so important you need to leave your section unmanaged.”

“It’s not unmanaged, sir,” Dan replied, clenching his jaw with a smile he tried desperately hard to cling on to. “Gareth, being the assistant section manager for grocery, is more than capable of covering my hours as he does during my pre-scheduled annual leave and, of course, this past weekend.”

Dan squared his shoulders to accentuate his full height, which towered over Mr. Doil swiveling from side to side in his office chair. He frowned and stroked his moustache while humming deeply.

“And where are you going?” he asked, again.

Dan sighed. He knew he needed to spill it. Mr. Doil wasn’t likely to let him slide away so easily. “Micky’s
