Resisting Him by Leslie Johnson

For the rest of the afternoon we hung out at his dadâs place, out in the western suburbs. It surprised me to realize that it was my first time here. Even in high school, Iâd never visited him during the school holidays. One obvious reason was the distance. But the bigger one was that summer holidays equaled boysâ time according to Marcus, a time reserved for his dad and his mates from his old public school.
âWhy didnât your dad sell this place when he married Mom?â I asked, lounging on the sofa. We were alone in the house. I stared at the picture frames hanging on the walls â pictures of Marcus as a toddler and a gangly thirteen-year-old, pictures of him playing rugby league and cricket in high school, and of course, pictures of the proud day when Marcus received his masterâs degree. By the looks of it, Dane Johnson was incredibly proud of his son.
As well he should be.
âSell the place?â Marcus repeated, incredulous. âAre you kidding? I grew up here. Mum and Dad moved into this house right after they married.â He plopped down next to me. âWhen Dad retires, heâll still be here, doddering around with his books.â
âBut you live so far away now.â I noted sadly. âDoesnât he feel lonely?â
Marcus snuck a glance at me. âWell, heâs not that lonely.â When I shot him a questioning look, he sighed heavily. âI wasnât going to tell you, not yet anyway, but maybe you should know.â
âKnow what?â
âDadâs been seeing someone for the past eight months,â he said, watching me carefully. âI think this is it, Charlie. Sheâs the one.â He paused briefly. âAs soon as Abigail signs those divorce papers, heâs going to marry her.â
I was stunned. Had Mom known this all along? Was that why sheâd been dragging her feet, unwilling to sign those papers? The thought of her suffering alone made my heart ache.
Oh, Mom. Iâm so sorry.
âDoes Mom know about this?â I whispered.
âI think she does,â Marcus answered, a ridge forming between his brows. âAre you all right? You look like you might faint.â
âIâm fine. I just . . . you surprised me, thatâs all.â
He leaned down, planting a soft kiss on my shoulder. âSorry to be the bearer of bad news. But try to be happy for Dad, yeah?â
All I could do was nod numbly.
Marcus began kissing my neck as he ran a hand up my thigh. He was getting frisky again. I leaned away.
âStop that. I told you Iâm not going to cheat on Troy.â
His grip on me tightened, his eyes blazing. âIâve had enough of this holier-than-thou shit you keep pulling on me. Iâm going to give you one day, Charlie. One fucking day. If you donât break up with him by then, Iâll fucking do it for you.â
I knew he was right. There was no doubt in my mind that it was Marcus I wanted, not Troy. It had always been Marcus. Trying to prolong the inevitable would only end up hurting Troy even more.
