CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“Y

ou must be Thessaly.” An older woman enters the small carved-out room and offers me her hand.

Knowing the guys obviously felt comfortable sharing my real name with her, I respond with less guard and accept her hand. “Yes, ma’am. Thessaly Allifair.”

“Nice to meet you. I’m Dr. Hughes.” Wrinkles deepen at the corners of the doctor’s eyes as she gives me a professional and accommodating smile.

“Nice to meet you as well.” My hand drops from hers, and I put extra effort into keeping them loosely resting on my thighs — rather than twisting them nervously — while I await whatever news she’ll have.

Dr. Hughes looks around at each guy and eyes the lack of remaining area in the room with a sigh. “You boys sure take up a lot of space.” She clears her throat and tilts her head way back in order to look up at Tobias.

“Is it okay if they all stay?” I ask, now worried she’d prefer them gone. My fingers naturally move to twine together in my lap and I halt the motion, spreading them over my jeans instead, to wipe the clamminess away.

“Yes, dear. That’s fine.” She smiles at me but side-eyes Jax, who is leaning against the wall beside her, as she pulls up a stool and sits. “Now, your friends here explained to me that you’ve been drugged and can’t remember what you went through at the Central Region’s Exam Center, correct?”

“That’s correct. Not a single thing.”

Julian sits beside me in the only other available chair, and Bram leans against the room’s carved opening, ducking his head in order to fit.

“And they have explained everything to you now?” Dr. Hughes wheels her chair in front of me, plops down onto the round cushion, and pulls a pen from the metal clasp on a clipboard.

“Yes ma’am, that’s right.”

“Wonderful. How do you feel about this news?” she asks, placing her other hand gently over my now tightly clasped ones.

“Confused. It’s hard to be emotionally invested in something you have no memory of.”

“Of course. This is a little unusual, I’ll admit. In order to understand everything better, I’d like to recommend you get an internal examination. Is this something you’re okay with?”

My head nods of its own accord as though it knows the proper response despite my uncertainty. “What do you think they did to me?” I ask, darting a glance behind her to gauge Tobias’s reaction to my question.

Tobias, however, looks down at the doctor expectantly.

“If you’re agreeable, I’d much prefer to not be too hasty with my assumptions. An examination can tell us with facts rather than guesses,” she responds, all business.

But if she warns me now, I can mentally prepare for the worse, right?

“It’s entirely up to you, of course. You control what happens,” Dr. Hughes explains, no doubt reading my facial expressions. I lift my hand and rub my fingers over the creases between my eyebrows, trying to erase the worry etched on my face. Knowing I have a say in what goes on is definitely reassuring, but the question she asked isn’t.
