Two weeks passed, and I was, amazingly, finding myself falling madly in love with Red Hook, the people who lived there, and with my handsome host. Of course, falling madly in love with my host was not amazing by any means. My friends liked to tell me that I give my heart too easily, fall too quickly, and mourn my losses too long. Perhaps that’s so. All I know is that Galen Ellison was the finest man I had ever met. He was strong, patient, kind, funny, and respectful. He never once took advantage or pressed his suit. I knew he desired me, that was obvious, but he was always courteous. I was seeing so much of his mother in him; she was a delightful woman who checked in on me daily. She made sure I took my pills, was moving but not overdoing, ate well, slept when needed, and had company when Galen was off at work. She’d even switched shifts at the hospital so that she would be at hand during the day if I should need anything. I couldn’t even wrap my mind around that kind of charity. And the food flowing into the small townhouse was overwhelming. Between Luis and Shanelle, we’d not have to cook for months. Suited me fine.
With Galen at my side, I felt as if I could face anything. We’d started working on my fear of walking the streets at night. It had taken a full week until I would even step out on the stoop and look down his street after sunset. Every time I did, I had flashbacks of that night. On the eighth day, we walked hand-in-hand to his mother’s house. My fingers were white-knuckled, my newly-healed lung working hard, but I made it. I made it! Granted, it was only a hundred feet, but I did it. We celebrated with coffee and carrot cake. My bruises were fading, but I feared my ass was growing an inch a day. Between all the cooking that Shanelle and Luis did, coupled with my inactivity, I had to be inflating like a pool toy. It simply had to stop, but I was feeling so contented and secure that anytime someone offered me a cookie or a hot chocolate or a sweet kiss, I took it. Shanelle never offered kisses, those were from Galen, and they were growing in intensity each time our lips met. Which happened more and more frequently. Kissing the man was one of the highlights of my day.
Tonight, we’d decided to take a stroll around the block. I’d been pacing the house like a nervous cat for an hour before Galen arrived home. Tavi bounced around his feet on his back legs when my blue angel walked into the house.
“Let me change, and we’ll take our walk,” Galen said after I bent down for a kiss on the cheek. I nodded, unsure of circling the whole block in one fell swoop. What if someone got ideas about us?
