Cole
Cole stared at the frail looking man in the hospital bed and tried to process what he had just learned. If the intel he had received was true, the manâs actions were understandable. Not justifiable, but understandable.
âAny news on the women?â
Cole turned to see Cara striding his direction. Her face wore an even more worried expression than when heâd left her, and he wondered how the call with her boss had gone. âThe women have all been admitted while they wait on the blood test results, but no news so far. At least not on them.â
Caraâs brow furrowed. âWhat do you mean?â
Cole turned back toward the glass that looked into the hospital room. âI did manage to find out some information on your friend in there.â
A derisive scoff escaped Caraâs thin lips. âHeâs no friend of mine. Especially not if heâs the one who killed Steve, attacked me, and stole our research.â
âI can understand that, but I called in a few favors. It turns out David here has been receiving quite a few large payments over the last year.â
âFor what?â Curiosity threaded Caraâs voice though her face remained impassive.
âThatâs a good question, but my guess would be that he was helping someone. Someone or some group with large pockets who wanted intel on your project. Thereâs more though.â
âMore? What more could there be?â Anger flashed in Caraâs eyes, and Cole knew he better tread lightly.
âIt turns out that Davidâs sister has a rare form of cancer. She was diagnosed shortly before he became an intern for you if my timeline is correct, so my guess is that his actions are about getting the money to pay for his sisterâs cancer treatments.â
Cara crossed her arms and fixed him with an icy stare. If looks could kill, he would have been incinerated on the spot from her gaze. âI donât care what the reason for his actions are. He killed Steve, and his actions may kill many in this town.â
âItâs certainly not justifiable, I agree.â
âItâs madness is what it is. I just hope he lives, so I can interrogate him and go after the people or person who sent him on this mission.â
âI get your frustration, but we donât know for sure that he killed Steve. Did he seem like the type to wear cufflinks?â
Cara opened her mouth to reply and then closed it. She blew out a harsh breath before raking her hand through her short hair. âNo, he didnât, but I didnât know him very well. However, I also donât know many college kids who even know what cufflinks are.â Another sigh escaped her lips. âYou know what? I need a break. Iâm going to get a coffee and cool off a bit.â
Cole watched her walk away and bit the inside of his lip. He wished he had the right words to say, but it seemed Steve had been like a partner to her. That kind of loss wasnât easy to recover from. He knew that all too well.
âWas that Cara I saw leaving?â Nick asked as he stepped out of Davidâs room.
