Chapter 10

Thane

Standing in front of the airport I lean against my car and wait for my buddy. I haven’t seen Zade since I left the Marines four years ago. Zade and I were close back in the day. More than close, actually. Not that it was ever anything serious, just a way for us both to scratch an itch while deployed without blowing our covers as gay men.

“Well if it isn’t the Kraken,” a smile spreads across my face as I hear Zade’s voice. I turn and spot him coming toward me.

“Zade!” I push myself off the car and meet him halfway, wrapping him in a hug and giving him a firm clap on the back. “It’s fucking good to see you, man.”

“Likewise.” I pop my trunk open and Zade tosses his bags in before making his way around to the passenger side.

“Thanks for letting me crash with you for a few days,” he says as I jump into the car and pull away from the curb.

“No problem. Brother’s for life, right?” I offer my fist for a bump which Zade returns.

“I hope not too brotherly,” Zade’s voice takes on a deeper timbre and my stomach knots. Oh shit, this just got awkward.

“Um, about that…” I risk a quick glance at him before I ease onto the on ramp for the highway. “I’m seeing someone. Well, not actually seeing him, but I want to be seeing him. He’s staying with me right now. I should’ve said something sooner. I’m sorry if I made things weird.”

Zade is quiet for several seconds before he gives me a friendly slug to my arm and lets out a laugh.

“Dude, I’m the one who just made things weird. Okay, we’re going to pretend that never happened and you’re going to tell me all about your man. What’s his name? How’d you meet?”

I let out a relieved breath.

“His name is Madden, and we met last month. It’s the worst ever ‘how we met’ story, to be honest. We met at a nightclub and before I could work up the game to take him home with me, there was a shooting. He was shot three times.”

“Holy fuck.”

“Yeah, it was crazy. He’s okay now, or getting there anyway. He’s staying with me while he recovers because his place was a fifth floor walk-up, and he’s got a bum leg now.”

“So, not dating but you want to be?”

“Yeah,” I let out a wistful sigh.

“You’ve slept with him, though,” Zade says knowingly.

“Only once. He’s still healing physically and emotionally so I didn’t want to push him, and he said he wasn’t ready for anything right now,” I explain.

“I’m sure he’ll come around, you’re a great guy.”

I don’t miss the longing tone in his voice so I scramble to change the subject.

“So, are you going to tell me why you didn’t re-up? I was sure you were a lifer.”

“I thought so too, but...things change.” Zade’s tone is more subdued than I’ve ever heard it before.

“Do you want to talk about it?” I offer.
