“No, yes, just like that,” Kristen guided Ashleigh.

“It’s too big,” she said, trying to angle the fish in.

“Just keep reeling it in.”

“He’s going to rip my arms off!” she said through a laugh. Kristen came up behind her, put her arms around her, and grabbed the pole with her. Ashleigh’s breath caught, and her entire body warmed when Kristen pushed up against her back.

“We got him,” Bailey said next to her ear, and Ashleigh shivered. “Okay, now pull!”

Bailey pulled back too, and in doing so, tightened her grip on Ashleigh. She tried not to notice the smell of Kristen’s skin, so close to hers, as she pulled on the rod.

Finally, they yanked so hard that the mammoth lake trout was pulled out of the water and came hurtling into the boat.

“Holy shit. That thing is huge!” Jared said. “Looks like those lobsters are going to have some competition tonight.” He grabbed the line and expertly pulled the hook from the fish’s mouth. Ashleigh turned away at the sight.

“Can’t quite stomach it?” Kristen asked beside her. Her small smile showed her comment held no malicious intent.

“I suppose that’s the vegetarian in me.”

“You two are staying for dinner, right?” Jared asked with his most hopeful smile.

“You don’t have a curfew or anything, do you?” Bailey asked teasingly.

Ashleigh slapped her arm lightly.

“We’re staying,” Ashleigh answered, her eyes still on Kristen. “That is, if your sister can behave herself.”

Jared and Cyndi shared a knowing look, and Ashleigh’s cheeks warmed.

“Well, I think that catch is definitely as good as we’re going to get for the day,” Jared said. “You guys ready to haul in and head back?”

The return ride had more wind, and the day was cooling off, which made the breeze rather chilly in the late afternoon. Goosebumps rose on Ashleigh’s arms and legs. “I guess it’s a good thing we didn’t take a swim.” She pointed at her raised flesh when she noticed Kristen looking at her.

“Well, since you guys have your suits on, we can hit up the hot tub after dinner, if you like,” Cyndi said.

“I don’t know if we’ll be here that long,” Kristen answered cautiously. It was clear that she didn’t want Ashleigh to feel pressured.

“Speak for yourself. I’m freezing, and that sounds amazing right about now.” Ashleigh grinned.

“I knew vegetables weren’t the only thing we had in common.” Cyndi laughed.

“Here.” Bailey took off her charcoal zip-up hoodie and offered it to Ashleigh.

“You’ll be cold,” she protested.

“It’s all right.” Bailey wrapped it around Ashleigh’s arms. “I’m used to the breeze.”

“Thank you.”

Ashleigh inhaled the scent of the sweater and felt an answering dip in her stomach. Even with the smell of the lake surrounding them, it was all Bailey, and she wrapped it tighter around herself. God, she was getting pathetic, but what was she supposed to do? Here was this amazing, gorgeous woman giving her all of her attention, even introducing her to her family, and she was supposed to, what, pretend it didn’t affect her? Kristen was everything she’d dreamed of finding in a partner.
