Chapter Nineteen

~ Joanna ~

I woke with a start at two in the morning. Rubbing my eyes, I sat up to try to figure out what had awakened me. I didn't hear the baby on the monitor.

My blood ran cold when I realized what I was hearing; someone was inside my house. I could hear footsteps and someone opening cabinets.

My next thought was getting to Oakley and it had me jumping out of bed, rummaging around for a weapon. Sadly, the only thing I came up with was my slipper. What I planned to do with it, I had no idea? Slap someone, I guess. Still, I clutched it like a lifeline as I slowly made my way across my bedroom, taking a deep breath as I slowly turned the doorknob to my room.

I had no plan, just knew I had to get across the house to Oakley's room. As I stepped into the hallway that leads to the kitchen, I could see the back door was ajar. Why hadn't my alarm gone off? This was the second time that it hadn't worked.

I also realized I should have grabbed my cell phone, not just this useless slipper. I peeked around the kitchen. Nobody. I tip-toed into the living room without seeing anyone. I made it to the hallway that leads to Oakley's room when I heard something in my office. I sprinted as quietly as possible into her room.

Heading straight to her window, I unlocked it and slid it open. Then I carefully picked her up, dropping the slipper. I climbed out the window, cradling her as gently as I could. Again, I had no plan, but we were out of the house and away from whoever was in there.

Oakley started to cry. I needed to get away from the house, but I couldn't think. I ran down the street and hide several houses down near the park.

"Shh, Oakley. It's okay." I rubbed her back.

Suddenly, there was a figure next to me. I screamed.

"Ms. Joanna, it's okay. It's me ... Eddie."

It was one of Hank's guys. I sighed with relief.

"Oh, thank gawd, Eddie. Someone's in my house."

"I'm on it, but first, come with me." He walked me over to a dark SUV that I hadn't even noticed and opened the back door. In the driver's seat was Al. "Al, there is someone in her house, I'm going to check it out."

Eddie grabbed something from the front seat, I'm guessing a gun. Then I watched his dark figure creep down the street towards my house and then disappear from sight.

I sat in silence with Al; the only sound was Oakley's occasional whimper. Several minutes ticked by as we waited.

Finally, Eddie came back.

"It looks clear. I called the police, and they are on their way to take a report."

"Thank you so much." I started to get out of the car.

"No, wait for the police to get here. We'll stay with you until they arrive."

Thankfully, the baby had fallen back asleep in my arms as we waited.
