Xane: Could be some time. Don’t wait up for me.

-16-

Inside the room, Xane fastened the latch. The suite had a different layout to the one he was sharing with Luthor and Dani, being all on one level, rather than two. A stubby corridor led into a spacious lounge, with mahogany flooring underfoot, and a panoramic view of the Gothenburg city skyline dead ahead. Momentarily, he stared at the lights on the enormous Ferris wheel inside Lisberg amusement park. It always impressed him how green and bright that skyline was for a city. Tall buildings nestled between equally tall trees, like they’d all been glued onto a model railway layout.

Between his position and the view, a rainbow of splintered mirrored glass littered the floor. Across that, the standing lamp sprawled, having obviously been given a sound drubbing. Several of the dining table chairs had been similarly assaulted, while a cobwebbed crack ran through the glass table itself.

No wonder Alle was scared. He was scared. Spook in a rage was fearsome. Also, thankfully, a once every half a decade occurrence. Much like his drunkenness.

Passage between the lounge and the bedroom was via a pair of fold-away doors. They currently stood open, revealing a red river flowing towards a growing stain on the bedside rug. The smell of wine rose off it as Xane gingerly tiptoed his way across the room. Too bad he hadn’t thought about shoes in his rush to get here.

“Spook?”

His friend sat straddled across one corner of the king-sized bed, his skin a deathly hue. He was dressed as he’d been when Xane had left him earlier, now minus one sock and shoe, and with a rip in the neck of his T-shirt. Whatever maelstrom of energy had fuelled his attack on the furnishings seemed to have at least temporarily abated. Xane’s greeting garnered no response. Not so much as a twitch of acknowledgement. Spook was as marble.

Catatonic had never been a state he had much success dealing with.

“Hey,” Xane pushed Spook’s blond hair away from his face. He had a cut on his cheek and numerous others over his hands. All to be expected, given the state of the place. Was it a blessing or a curse that he was currently calm? “Do you want to tell me what happened?”

No response.

He hadn’t really expected one.

“Was it her, Spook?”

That did prompt a noise. Admittedly, one so soft, so quiet he couldn’t make out the reply. “Would you say that again?”

“Yes,” his friend croaked. The pain in his eyes communicated what millions of words would never accomplish.

Bugger. The last clinging strand of hope snapped. Xane swaddled Spook in an embrace. It was like hugging an automaton. “Siv?”

Maybe it was a mistake to say her name. A tremor rippled through Spook’s body, jerking him free of Xane’s hold and propelling him onto his feet. “She’s here. She knows I’m here. I have to leave.”

He started searching, except he didn’t seem sure what it was he was looking for. Xane doggedly pursued
