Chapter Eleven

It took two days for the test results to come back that medically cleared them for play. Given their histories and the precautions that Luc used, Josef was fairly certain that they would pass with flying colors, and they did.

The psychological evaluation went swiftly for Luc. Aubrey’s took longer. Still harboring emotions attached to her rape, she would shy away from Josef’s touch whenever they first got into bed. She had to be wooed, coaxed, shown that he could be trusted before she allowed him any liberties with her body. He had yet to make her climax, and they still hadn’t had sex, but little by little, she was growing more comfortable with him.

Meanwhile, Luc was taking care of his needs.

Filming had begun. Hair and makeup came first, followed by breakfast, served by the caterer half an hour before call time, usually at 6 am. Once shooting got underway, they expected to be there at late as 8 pm.

Anytime Aubrey was required on the set to play young Mozart, Josef was there, too, playing Mozart’s father Leopold—although his feelings for Aubrey were far from paternal. The merest whisper of adagio in her ear was enough to make her squirm on the piano bench.

Today had been particularly trying, a concert scene that required take after take, with the producer-stars of the film wanting more shots from multiple angles. Josef wanted nothing more than to share a late dinner, then perhaps a swim, a shower, or a bath with Luc and Aubrey, and see where things went from there. Something was still preventing her from fully opening up to him, but thus far he had been unable to discover what it was.

His little sparrow was exhausted, to the point of nearly falling asleep at the table. They showered together and tucked Aubrey into bed between them, making no demands upon her. Josef watched her sleep until his eyes drifted shut. He woke up around three in the morning. Rather than disturb their slumber, he slipped out of bed, padded downstairs to the living room, turned on the fireplace, and sat in his favorite chair, watching the flames, feeling insufficient and pondering the future.

He must have dozed. He came awake when Aubrey knelt by his feet, hugged his calf, and laid her head against his thigh. He said nothing, just threaded his fingers through her hair that never seemed to behave.

“Talk to me,” he said. “What have I done? What can I do? I want you to be happy, Liebchen. It hurts to see you so.”

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m trying. But…I can’t quiet the voices, that say we’re wrong, that three is bad…that Luc needs you more than me…that I can’t give you what you want, what you need. I’ll never have children,” she told him, her voice fracturing. “I won’t risk passing my blindness on. And every time I think about the future, what you and Luc might want…eventually….”

“Ach, Spätzchen! Come here.” Reaching down, he dried her tears and pulled her onto his lap.
