Chapter Fifteen

Piper

Sitting in the Slayer’s clubhouse should have felt a lot scarier than it actually did. I was in the lion’s den, surrounded by rough bikers, many of which were criminals. However, from the moment I walked in the door, these men were nothing but nice to me. Of course, I didn’t leave Brett’s room or mix and mingle with the club members, but every man I’d met so far had been respectful. There were no leers or underhanded comments, just a level of politeness I’d rarely experienced when out in the local community.

Teeny tracked me down. The Slayers scoured the entire town looking for a woman with my first name who’d been seen on the back of a motorcycle lately. Teeny had eventually bumped into Phoebe.

At first, she’d been reluctant to tell him anything about me, but apparently Teeny can be very persuasive when he wants to be. He’d been desperate to get ahold of me because, according to some things Brett had said, the Slayers thought I was his old lady.

That was biker-speak for wife, fiancé, or woman a biker dated exclusively. In other words, they thought I was his significant other and moved heaven and earth to ensure I was at his side in his time of need. The way they supported one another was kind of sweet.

Phoebe slipped into the room, carrying two cups of coffee. Handing me one, she eased down in the chair beside me. It was the same spot that several Slayers had sat in from time to time when they came to check on Brett. Storm, Thunder, Celt and Teeny had each been in to visit him so far.

I took a sip of the coffee and murmured, “Thanks Phoebe.”

She glanced from me to him and back again. “How’s he doing? His color looks better today.”

I quelled my anxiety and put a positive spin on the situation. “He’s getting stronger every day. The medic said the doctor had to give him a couple of units of blood to make up for what he lost and some antibiotics. He’s had the IV in for three days and is fully hydrated, but they’re afraid to take it out until he’s up and voiding on his own.”

When one side of her mouth quirked up, I realized that maybe I had given a bit too much information. I cleared my throat and finished my informal report, “He was awake almost all day and spent most of it complaining about me being here and worrying about Shelby. I expect he’ll be up and out of this room in the next day or two.”

My friend nodded. “Teeny says he can go home when he likes, and the medic will visit him once or twice a day. He has to come here to see him, so going to his apartment would probably be closer.”

My mouth dropped open. “Brett can’t go home. He lives alone. There would be no one there if he got worse or needed something.”

Phoebe looked at me over the rim of her jumbo cup.
