Paul opened the front door when he arrived home from school and the smell of spices invaded his nostrils. His stomach rumbled.

‘Hello?’

‘I’m in the kitchen,’ Jenna called. Out of habit he checked his phone again, but there was still no message from Nicole, only a barrage of happy photographs displayed on her main feed. It had been almost twenty-four hours since he’d sent her his message.

He dropped his keys on the hallway table and scooped up the mail. This time he checked it carefully. There were none from Nicole. Thankfully there were only a couple of bills. He put them back down and walked into the kitchen.

Jenna was standing in front of the stove. Steam sizzled from the wok and her cheeks were flushed, but there was a sparkle in her eyes and her hair hung down her back in smooth waves. The necklace he had given her was once again round her neck, and he swallowed.

She’d been so pleased to get it back, but to him it represented how easily things could be taken away from him.

No. She’s mine. His gaze racked over her exposed collarbone and the dip at the base of her neck, and primal longing flooded him. He needed to have her. Claim her. He stepped up behind her and wrapped his arms round her waist. Her scent trailed up his skin. ‘You smell good enough to eat. How about we have first course upstairs?’

‘Bridget and Daniel are coming round tonight for dinner.’

‘Screw them,’ he murmured as he pushed back the top of her blouse to reveal a tiny scrap of lacy fabric. It was the same kind of stuff Nicole used to wear. Designed to titillate. Control. Dominate. Nicole hadn’t loved him or their child. She’d put herself first. Put her job before him.

Paul whipped his hands away and stepped back, as if he’d been stung.

His parents’ whispered conversations about Paul’s habit of pulling wings from butterflies filled his mind. They hadn’t loved him either. Said he was bad. They’d made him do it.

His vision blurred, as bright light seemed to fill the room. His fingers twitched, wanting to rip it from her skin and replace it with the plain white bras she usually wore. To put her back in the spot she’d always had in his mind. Pure, sweet, kind. Not this person dressed in lace.

Heat pounded in his brow as he took a step closer.

‘What’s wrong?’ Jenna turned to him, her shoulder still exposed from where he’d pushed back the blouse, eyes full of confusion. Her words broke the madness that had been coursing through him, and he staggered back, sucking in some much-needed air.

He needed to breathe. And again. And again. Stay centred. Stay calm. His hammering heart finally slowed down, and he forced a smile onto his face.

Jenna wouldn’t betray him.

And he wouldn’t hurt her.

He loved her.

‘Nothing,’ he finally said, proud of how relaxed he sounded. ‘I realised you were right. We have visitors about to descend on us. So, what can I do to help?’

Jenna studied him, as if unsure how to respond.
