Chapter Twenty-Four
Easing the door open, Liam peered inside the room. He jerked back a half second before a bullet wouldâve hit him head on. Theyâd experienced little resistance but this guy in the attic was apparently intent on staying the course. Eve had handled one of the attic shooters quite handily. Now it was Liamâs job to convince this other guy that he didnât want to go the same route.
âHabla English?â
âYeah,â a man answered in a distinctly Midwestern accent.
âThereâs no way out for you. The house is surrounded.â
âThen I guess we negotiate.â
âNot sure what youâve got to negotiate with. Looks like weâve got all the cards.â
âOh yeah? What about this?â
âPlease help me. I donât want to die.â
Cursing under his breath, Liam took a step back to regroup. The voice had been a womanâs, quivering with terror.
âOkay, you do have some cards. How do you want to play this?â
âMe and the girl walk out of here. Once Iâm safe, Iâll let her go.â
Yeah, right.
âWhat happens if I say no?â
âEasy. I kill the girl.â
âAnd then I kill you.â
âMaybe so, but you got a dead girl on your hands. Iâm assuming thatâs not in your plans.â
The guy had a point.
Liam stepped a few feet from the attic entrance and said softly, âHey, Ash. You close?â
âOn the second floor. Did I hear right? Heâs got a hostage?â
âYeah. Can you come up here and keep him busy? Iâve got an idea.â
âOn my way.â
Shouldâve expected this. The op had gone too smoothly. With the exception of the lookout that Eve had taken care of, theyâd experienced almost no resistance. Yeah, a shot here and there but nothing they couldnât handle. In his experience when something was too easy, thereâs trouble brewing. Heâd never lost a victim, and he wasnât about to start now.
Ash came up behind him. âWhatâs the plan?â
âYou keep him talking. Iâm going to go at him from the outside.â
âHowâs that?â
âThereâs a balcony and a window.â
âYou do realize thatâs not really a window, right? And that balcony? Itâs for decoration only. Itâs not built to hold a gnatâs ass, much less a two-hundred-pound man.â
âYeah, but it is a way inside. Just keep him busy. Iâll do the rest.â
âHey,â the guy shouted, âwhatâs going on out there? We got a deal or not?â
âHold on,â Liam yelled back. âIâm conferring with my boss.â
âWell, hurry up. I donât have all day.â
âBe right with you,â Liam assured him. âI canât authorize squat without talking to the boss man.â
âWell then, let me talk to him instead.â
âYeahâ¦okay. Thatâs a good idea.â Liam sent a grin to Ash. âKeep him talking. Iâll let you know when Iâm ready.â
Liam headed downstairs, hearing Ashâs authoritative warnings of what happens in most hostage situations. Sounded dire, but Liam knew this assholeâs kind. He wasnât going to give up without concessions. OZ didnât do concessions.
Sean and Xavier met him in the foyer. âWhatâs the plan?â
âFollow me around back. I may need a boost.â
He had to give them credit. Instead of telling him it was a boneheaded idea, they followed him.
