Chapter 7

My feet were sticky from the dry blood. The rouge fabric covering the centre of the stairs was attaching its fibres to my feet. I kept my body low, trying to see the lobby. The front door was open with, what I could see, four people standing discussing what to do. One of the men especially stated how he wanted to find me and hurt me, no need for bidding. Just for the pleasure. My feet peeled off the carpet and joined the marble. The main door wasn’t a wise choice. The tunnel. I looked down the hall to my right, the dead end. If I got to the farmhouse through the tunnel I could get in the car and phone the police. I checked that I wasn’t in sight and then as quickly and as quietly as I could, I made my way down the decadent hall. The hallway made a single breath as loud as a cannon, or so I felt. I made it to the wall. It was plain like before but not even a seem on the wall indicated a passage. I placed the ceramic into my pocket. One look round to check I was still undetected. My hands felt along the wall, not a piece out of place. In deep frustration, I smacked my hands against the wall. My right hand went half an inch deeper into the wall. Which released it. It calmly opened passed me revealing the portrait from inside the storage room. I let myself smile as I couldn’t believe my luck.

“Hey!” bellowed down the hall.

One of the men from the door saw the fabric my feet had taken off the bottom steps. I had given them a trail. The wall would not pudge as I tried to pull it shut. He was joined by two other people. The radio attached to my joggers was screeching for back up. I gave up on trying to close the wall. I threw furniture and lamps behind me, trying to block them. I reached the door to the tunnel. I closed it behind me, and I ran down the wet, cold tunnel, my piece of ceramic again in a tight grip. I was never that fast a runner, but I was hoping the adrenaline flooding my veins would push me. My ears heard the thundering of furniture being tossed around. The oak door breaking open and the finally the sounds of bodies running towards me. The one mercy was that the tunnel didn’t have any corners. I didn’t want to use the phone in my pocket as it would give away my distance in front of them. Instead, I used my open hand to guide me down the dark tunnel. My bare feet making little noise on the mud ridded floor. My mind made me believe that the walls were closing in on me as I struggled for breath. I thought of the last time I saw this tunnel. Thomas. He had been so brave in here.
