Chapter 4

As he watched Amara walk out the door, Draven had to force himself not to run after her. Every desire, every thought, every fiber in his body yearned to run after her and take her back into his arms. The solace he’d found with her in those brief but passionate moments entwined with Amara soothed his soul, his hunger, as nothing else had before.

Could he survive if he had to go into eternity without her? No. It was beyond comprehension. Now that he’d tasted that bliss, there was no going back.

He paced the floor of the library, planning out the changes he’d make to win Amara over. He’d take things slower the next time. At least the enchantment would give him another chance to make a more positive second impression.

Despite his intention of calming down and bringing his blood lust to heel, the thrum of it rushing through his veins dimmed his preternatural senses. He didn’t hear Mateo when he entered.

“Sir? Is everything all right?”

“No, not at all,” Draven replied, pacing back and forth. “That woman, Amara Madan, she was here years ago. Now she’s back and single. I had to see her. Find out if she was the siren from my dreams. We spoke, and then we kissed. It got... heated.”

Mateo smirked. “That sounds pleasant, yet you’re pacing like a caged panther?”

“I want to go to her. It takes everything in me not to run out that door right now. But I fear our connection is too intense. I saw guilt in her eyes.”

Mateo frowned and cocked his head to the side. “Wait a moment, you mentioned a dream siren? Have you been dreaming of her long?”

Had he said that part out loud? He didn’t want to seem crazy. “On occasion,” he hedged.

“She visited here years ago, you dreamed her off and on, and now she’s back and you made out in the library?”

“More or less. Yes.”

Mateo held his thumb up to his lips, which Draven had come to learn was his ‘I’m going to point out something, but I don’t think you’re going to like it’ tell.

“What is it?” Draven spat out. He needed to wrap up this conversation and go check on Amara. Didn’t he? But why? And why not? Anything could have happened to her in the past few... minutes?

“It’s just…” Mateo’s voice trailed off, as he stared out the window at the pale sliver of a moon.

“Spit it out, youngling, or I swear…”

Mateo held up a hand. “After the past few weeks' calls with Ambrose, I wonder. He, the eldest among us, finds a mate. Then Orpheus does. Aren’t you the next eldest?”

No. It couldn’t be. “Yes, I’m Orpheus’ junior by a mere fifty years.”

“What if that’s the pattern?”

“You’re assuming Amara is my fated mate,” Draven said, hearing the disbelief in his voice. And yet, saying the words struck a chord in him.

“You are behaving obsessively. There’s an instant connection between the two of you, or reconnection, in this case.” Mateo shrugged. “It’s a possibility you need to consider.
