Chapter Thirty:

RUMORS

We had nearly an hour left before we had to get to our second class. We sat in front of our lockers, while Taylor continued to keep a careful distance from me, cautiously avoiding touching me at any cost.

I stretched my legs out in front of me and leaned against my locker. And somehow I managed to doze for almost a full half hour before we had to get to our chemistry class. I felt like the energy had been sucked out of me; as if I had just run a marathon and there was nothing left.

Taylor sat cross-legged next to me, carefully observing me. His elbows were balanced on his knees and his chin was perched on his fists. He seemed to be mentally debating something—most likely whether or not to take me home.

“Emma?” He asked softly.

I opened my eyes slowly to his worried expression.

“The bell is going to go in a couple of minutes. We should get to class.” He said gently. “If you’re still determined to go.” I nodded and struggled to my feet. I was still a little disoriented and not entirely sure I could do this. I was suddenly beginning to despise the tension between Taylor and I. I could have used his help, but he was still carefully keeping his distance.

I leaned heavily on my locker door and slipped my books from the shelf. I clutched them tightly to my chest, simply to try and hide my shaking hands.

I closed my locker and turned to Taylor to see that he was already waiting for me.

He reached for my hand and I watched him carefully, but when he seemed to realize what he was doing, he stopped and dropped his hand, “Sorry.” He mumbled under his breath.

I suddenly felt horrible. I wanted to hold his hand, to prove that I was beginning to forgive him. I felt my stomach lurch.

“Umm… come on. We’ll be late…” He said quietly, moving down the hall. The bell rang and I had to hurry to catch up to him. I wanted to reach out to him so I wouldn’t lose him in the crowd. I could see people who were already looking at us strangely, stopping to stare and gawk.

I shrunk back behind Taylor, but even peering over his shoulder, I could see the people looking at us. “She doesn’t look that sick.” I heard someone say.

“God, I can’t believe she took him back.” Someone else gasped. “If it were me, I would never even speak to him.”

“You know he’s been sleeping with Paige this whole time… She never even knew he was dating this other girl. Paige was heartbroken when she found out he wouldn’t leave her.” I heard. I chewed my lip anxiously, suddenly not sure if I could do this.

“She had some kind of disease. She’s probably contagious; you’d better keep your distance…” Another disembodied voice cut through the hum of voices around us.

Taylor led the way into the classroom. We were late; there were already at least a dozen students waiting in the classroom.
