Chapter

Twenty-Three

Jasper strode outside without another word. Any of the Russos who argued with him now would regret it.

He had to get out of that house. Away from the entire family.

Immediately.

He hadn’t believed what Stella had said about a curse, but he’d heard—and felt—enough. The Harts had been mixed up with witches, the Russos were tied to the Harts, the Nightrocks had come between both of them, and Jasper…

Jasper’s chest burned with the undeniable pain of being moon called.

For a few hours after taking the tea, it had gone away, and he’d felt as much desire and love for Stella as he had before. But now the pain was back with force.

And there was something else. Something about Dee.

He grabbed Stella’s hand and pulled her after him through the garden to the street. When he was off the Russo property, he allowed himself to pause and take a deep breath.

“Hey,” Stella said soothingly, stroking his back. “It’s okay.”

They were still too close to the Russo house. Jasper hugged her against his side and began walking toward home. Just the feel of her hip bumping against his was enough to bring him closer to earth. “Sorry about that,” he said.

“For what? For saving my life?” She squeezed his ribs. “For making the Russos spill their family secrets that might explain everything? That might finally break the curse that’s constantly trying to ruin my life?”

He looked over his shoulder at the house to make sure none of the Russos had followed to argue. Arlo and Sharon because he’d taken their son into custody, and Dee because she always had something to argue about.

He gave Stella a grateful smile. How would he have gotten through this without her? “For storming out of there like a jerk.”

“You did what you had to do. They didn’t realize how angry you were.” She caught his hand and tangled her fingers through his. “They forget you’re the alpha with everything that comes with it.”

“A hot temper? An urge to kill anybody who disagrees with me?” As soon as he’d been old enough to regard his father critically, he’d vowed to be better than Hugo—more compassionate, more patient, less aggressive. Certainly less violent. “I’m turning into my father.”

“You are not,” she snapped.

The force of her reply surprised him. He squeezed her hand. “You sound pretty sure about that.”

“Of course I’m sure. It’s ridiculous.” She gazed up at him, her brown eyes warm and inviting. “What happened just now?”

“Thomas tried to kill you,” he said. “Have you forgotten already?”

“Not that—and I don’t think Thomas really would have hurt me.” She stopped walking and held him back. “Something in the house at the end. You were fine and then…”

Jasper’s stomach twisted. He didn’t want to tell her. It was a distraction, and they had too much to do—bringing Brody Hart to justice as soon as possible, for instance. He’d had an idea about how to do that, and nobody was going to like it.

“Talk to me,” she said. “I’ll get it out of you eventually, so you might as well spill now and save us both the energy.
