Oh sweet baby Jesus.

Maureen is spoiling for a fight and Emory will give her one if I don’t intervene. It’s not that I don't think Em can hold her own but I’m not going to put her in the crossfire of a battle where I am the intended target. She would only be collateral damage.

“Okay Maureen, what are you doing here?”

Emory and Maureen are squared off like two prizefighters in the ring, ignoring me so I step in between them, forcing the end of the stare off with my body.

“Maureen, we’re kind of busy here so why don't you tell me why you’re here?”

She blinks up at me and smiles. It isn’t really friendly, in fact I would call it feral and at one time I would have called it sexy. Not so much anymore.

“I need to talk to you about your career.”

“I’m going to grab a coffee,” Emory says and cuts me a glance as she walks away. Her back is rigid and she’s pissed. When I look at Maureen I let all of my irritation show.

“Why can’t you be nice?” I ask, knowing that it's a stupid question. Maureen isn’t nice because she doesn’t want to be. “You know what? Forget it. I know better than to expect the impossible.”

“Did you check her ID, Zane? Did she actually graduate high school?”

“She’s nineteen and that is not why you’re here,” I prod her on, hoping she gets to the point. “Emory and I have plans so”

“Right. She’s probably got a curfew.”

“Maureen,” I say, making sure she hears the warning. “Leave Emory alone.”

“Fine. I don’t have time for toddlers anyway. I need you to get me an answer on the offer we made you.”

“I told you that I’m not taking it.” I cross my arms over chest and shake my head for emphasis. We’ve been around this block about a million times. “I’m not giving up creative control.”

She smiles at me and this time she pours it all on and it is full of dirty promises. She reaches out and runs a fingernail over my forearm. There was a time when she got me hard and kept me that way. We never did get together no matter how hard she tried. We were always a failure to launch.

“You’ll be working with me. I’ll let you do whatever you want,” she cajoles, her voice low and laced with sugar. Too sweet. Too syrupy. It has never sounded genuine to me and now is no different.

“Not good enough. You wouldn’t agree to that and I don’t know why you expect me to. Send me a better offer through my agent and we can talk.”

She considers me, her teeth biting into her lower lip in either contemplation or seduction. I’m not entirely sure. I don’t really care. I twist around to see if I can find Emory.

“Am I boring you, Zane?” Maureen’s voice is laced with ice and the already chilly studio plummets into the arctic zone. I swallow, knowing I need to tread carefully.
