Chapter 30

“Truth strikes us from behind, and in the dark, as well as from before and in broad daylight.”

-Henry David Thoreau

Thomas McGonegal was the marriage of passion and common sense. He was driven by the former and restrained by the latter much like the gas pedal and brake of a fine automobile. He was solid. James trusted the instincts of men such as these for invariably they were right and dependable. He hung on every word.

“Everything I am about to tell you is verified in these,” said Thomas. He placed before James and Adrianna five worn leather books. “They are my grandfather’s journals. You will have full access to them for what I am about to tell you is fantastical in parts. I still find much of it unbelievable, but despite that, every element is true.” He had both Adriana’s and James’s attention.

“It all begins with a friendship that developed while my grandfather was a student at Cambridge. There was a fellow student named, James White.” James interrupted Thomas asking, “James White, where do I know that name? Wait a minute, it’s his name on the tomb in the mausoleum in Ohio along with his family.”

“The very one,” replied Thomas. “James E. White was a very famous cryptologist, and he was also my grandfather’s roommate and best friend. You will see him referred to as JE in the journals. The E stands for Edmund.”

James asked, “How is it that you own the property that the mausoleum was built on?”

“That was my grandfather’s final wish before he died. His friend fell on tough times despite his fame, so my grandfather bought the land and his son, my father built the tomb. James White died two years after it was completed. Well, at least we think he did. He disappeared and after a time it was presumed, he was dead.”

“Well, then the tomb is empty?” asked Adriana.

Thomas answered softly, “All of them are.”

“All of them? They were added later, yet no one is in each?” asked James.

“I am afraid that is correct. You see each of James White’s immediate descendants, his son, David and his daughter-in-law Marjorie also disappeared. There are no bodies in those tombs. What’s more, the place is cursed. I have been trying to sell the land for quite a long time. I told my sons that I bought it because it reminded me of Ireland, but the truth is it was my father who bought the land as he was fulfilling his father’s wish, but when my father was on his death bed, he made me swear that the land would be sold. He wanted no part of it. There is something about that mausoleum that is not right. In his journals my grandfather mentions repeatedly that the land opened up and he was transported to another place. There are a half dozen references to this and the area of where this takes place is exactly the location of the mausoleum. Also, there is a diagram…wait I have it here.
