Chen Yun returned to his chair and looked into his unfinished glass of port.

Interesting man, this James Reece.

Yun had not lied to him, not really, except for the part about respecting his decision.

There was only one acceptable choice.

Ba Jin entered and took a seat in what ten minutes earlier had been the American’s chair.

“Your assessment?” Jin asked.

“He’s smart, disarmingly so. He was even funny, right up until I brought up his family. The eyes that had been warm during the meal turned to ice. It even looked like they changed color.”

“You are familiar with his file, Minister. He has a history of solving problems through the direct application of violence.”

“That he does.”

“Is he considering our proposal?”

“That is difficult to say. He is a patriot, but he serves a corrupt and dying nation, one that is responsible for the deaths of his wife and daughter and SEAL Team, one that locked him in prison. As I said, he seems astute for an American.”

“But how logical is he?” Jin asked.

“That we will find out. What does the report say?”

Jin handed the minister a tablet.

“See for yourself.”

Yun slid a finger across the bottom of the screen and rapidly advanced a video that had recorded Reece’s every movement since he boarded the plane in San Jose; the jet, the Rolls-Royce, his suite, the fitness center, all the way up to this very room. The video had been run through an AI-enabled supercomputer’s predictive behavioral analysis program.

Yun stared at the final line in the report.

Body language, tone, and facial expressions indicated a negative response with 96 percent accuracy.

The minister handed the tablet back to the president’s envoy.

“How do you want to do it?” Yun asked.

“Fentanyl overdose from a Russian or Ukrainian hooker would do the job, but this Mr. Reece doesn’t seem the type. Fentanyl overdoses are so normal these days they rarely result in a thorough investigation.”

“We will send a Triad hit team and then control the investigation,” Yun said. “They will use any means necessary to be sure the one conduit to the outside world this Alice has will never leave Macau alive.”

“Wise move, Minister. I will let the president know as soon as it is done. He will be pleased to know that Alice is no longer an issue.”

Minister Yun swirled the sweet wine in its port glass remembering his words from earlier that evening.

Our time here is precious. One never knows how long one has.

True for all of us, the American had responded.

Chen Yun felt a slight chill.

He finished what was left of the ruby-red drink in one sip and stood to take his leave.

With any luck he could still make his card game.
