CHAPTER SIXTEEN
The wooden gate groaned as she opened it and stuck momentarily on a tuft of grass. She pulled a little harder and it opened fully, and Raven stepped calmly inside to lead her team to their dragons.
Leander tossed his head when he saw her and stepped forward away from the courtyard wall to greet his mage. You certainly took your sweet time getting here.
She grinned at him and caught his muzzle with both hands when he lowered it toward her. Youâre always so impatient.
I believe the same has been said about you, mage. Multiple times.
The other legionaries entered the courtyard with their riding tack slung over their shoulders. Now that theyâd reached the privacy of the high stone walls around them, the STAR team were all smiles and subdued laughter as they hurried toward their dragons.
Perchâs orange-brown dragon Vender tossed his head and screeched a greeting at her riderâs approach. After weeks of being groundedâfirst on a ship and now on the island, with only a brief time of flight the day the team had arrivedâthe mounts were only too eager to get into the air. Without being able to communicate with their riders as per her orders, the happy dragon shrieks were all the creatures could manage.
Within seconds, the joyful calls of eight dragons filled the air and echoed off the stone walls of the courtyard. Massive claws raked the grass, heads tossed, and wings stretched. The STAR team laughed at the welcome greeting, but Raven grimaced at the noise of dragons preparing to take off with their riders.
I wouldnât exactly call this subtle.
We are dragons, Leander reminded her as he butted her shoulder with his muzzle. There is nothing subtle about us. Except for our wit, of course.
She tried to smile and shook her head. Your wit notwithstanding, Leander, weâre gonna draw the attention of the entire island with all the screeching.
Thatâs right. Because the entire island didnât already know we were here.
With a grin, she nudged his snout away, dropped his tack onto the grass beside him, and turned to survey her team. âOkay. Before we get goingââ
Farbâs dragon Willow uttered a final screech and spread her wings wide as she reared on her hind legs. Dust and wisps of grass flurried from the courtyard when those wings beat once in excitement. Farb laughed and let his dragon savor the moment. âI know, Willow. I get it. Youâre ready to go. Weâre almost there.â
While the STAR mounts created a dragon cacophony in their eagerness to be airborne and the legionaries laughed and joked, Raven was acutely aware of multiple angry shouts in Spirgul from beyond the courtyard. The cry was taken up by dozens of other male voices and joined by the heavy clink of metal weaponry and the rhythmic thud of jogging footsteps. When it was only a few guards at a time, they made no sound at all across the grass. Dozens of them, however, were incredibly loud and grew rapidly closer.
Raven turned quickly toward Leander, whose glowing yellow eyes were only inches from her face.
