Day Ten

Saturday 18h15

Centre for Covert Media Studies

Yuliet Spooner’s Chubb Trident Euro Grade Six safe was open wide. Some of its former contents now spread across the floor. There was no obvious sign of forced entry – to the safe; to her office; or to the locked and alarmed building.

‘When did you discover this?’ asked Kelly, taking out his notebook – and then putting it away again. He was in two minds whether he should call in local CID. Danny’s earlier theory had left him concerned.

‘I came in to finish off a bit of work about five o’clock. Made a coffee in the kitchen and then came up here. So, I suppose five fifteen.’ Yuliet was hesitant, ‘I called Danny rather than the police due to the nature of what I do. There is stuff in here that is highly confidential. Details of my sources and so on.’

‘What did you expect Danny to do?’ Kelly was curious.

Yuliet laughed. Gallows’ humour, she thought. ‘Speak to you!’

Kelly ignored her. ‘How did they get in?’

‘I thought it strange when I unlocked the building. The alarm didn’t give me the normal ten seconds to deactivate. I was going to send a bollocking e-mail to the team. I thought whoever was the last person to leave, after work last night, hadn’t set the alarm. Doesn’t happen often. If at all.’ Yuliet thought. ‘One of the interior doors was open, latched on the fire door magnet. We shut all the doors as we leave. We have to be careful.’

‘A professional job then. And whoever opened this was clearly a skilled Peterman,’ observed Kelly bending down to examine the various keyholes and handles. ‘This model has relocking devices and anti-drilling plates. Explosives and hi-tech cutting tools would have been impotent too. Suggests to me someone in the know. Who else has the keys?’

Yuliet Spooner, head of the Centre for Covert Media Studies was not happy, ‘To the safe? Only one other person – and I trust them implicitly.’

‘We’ll have to talk to them. Give me their contact details.’ Yuliet scribbled on a piece of paper.

‘What’s missing?’ asked Danny. ‘What’s so important?’

‘The file.’ Yuliet admitted quietly.

‘File?’ challenged Kelly. ‘What file?’

‘The file I was handed by the anonymous woman. The Vory, Conor O’Murchadha, Ali Baka and Stanislaw Nowak. Press cuttings and redacted intelligence. Danny’s story and photographs.’ Yuliet had a long-term professional relationship with Kelly, and they trusted each other with off-the-books conversations of mutual benefit.

‘Is this the file we discussed?’ Kelly demanded of Danny.

Danny was a little sheepish. ‘Yes.’

‘The one I asked you to get a copy of?’

‘Yes,’ replied Danny.

Yuliet gave Danny a hard stare. ‘The file I told you about in strictest confidence.’

Danny nodded.

‘Did you make copies?’ Kelly asked Yuliet more in hope than expectation.

‘No!’ answered Yuliet a little too quickly. She tried unsuccessfully to stop her eyes looking up and right.

Kelly stared at her, remaining silent – he could easily read unintended body language. There was a long pause in the room.

‘Okay. Yes. I have a copy.’ Yuliet eventually admitted under Kelly’s intense stare.
