Back upstairs, Uilleam had the mercenaries, Kit, and Iris gather in the control room.

Now that he wasn’t in the same room as Karina, he could breathe easier … and think. Now, he could formulate a new plan as to what his next move would be going forward.

She might have surprised him by being the one who’d been waiting inside Governor Spader’s home, but he wouldn’t—couldn’t—allow her to have the upper hand for long.

“As you might be aware,” Uilleam announced to the room, turning in his chair to face them all, “Belladonna has made her demands. Considering I broke one of hers first”—one he had no intention of speaking about at the moment—“I’m attempting to honor the others before I grow weary of them. There’s only one that truly matters. She wants only to speak with Iris.”

Synek, as expected, bristled immediately, his dark brows bunching together as his mouth turned down into a harsh frown.

His counterpart, on the other hand, merely looked surprised. “Me?” she asked, looking first at Synek, then at Uilleam. “Belladonna only wants to talk to me?”

Uilleam nodded. “I’m sure she would have asked to speak to Calavera if she thought it was at all feasible.”

It wouldn’t be the first time she reached out to the woman in question. Though … a part of him doubted it even as he said it.

Karina was smart—smarter than any enemy he had crossed paths with before—and he didn’t doubt for a second that she had been watching them and probably knew more about Luna’s current condition than anyone else in this room.

Which only begged the question: Why was it so important that she speak with her?

And judging from the way Kit shifted on his feet at the very mention, Uilleam doubted he would ever agree to let her get near that room.

“But why would she want to talk to me?”

That was a question Uilleam didn’t have an answer to.

He didn’t know the girl well—only the absolute relevant details about her—but he could tell from the genuine confusion on her face that she didn’t have the answers any more than he did.

Before Uilleam could formulate a response, Winter, his resident hacker, asked a question of her own. “Anyone else curious about the whole white thing?”

“What’s that?” Synek asked.

“Seriously? No one else has noticed that she’s always in white. Her car is white … She requested a white uniform. I could totally keep going.”

“Right now,” Uilleam spoke up before the other could start sharing their theories, “her arbitrary choices are of no concern. I need to know what she’s planning, and seeing as she refuses to speak with me, I think this is far more important than that damn color.”

Unlike so many others, Winter had never seemed fazed by his poor disposition—perhaps because she dealt with a man’s whose was worse. “Seems like all she does is speak to you. You’re just not listening.”

If she wasn’t half as good as she was, he’d elect to replace her, or at the very least teach her a little about respect, but he couldn’t very well afford to replace her.
