Watch the news.

Okay, this was her game. I’d play along until I saw a reason not to. I turned on the TV. It was the middle of the night, lots of infomercials. Flipping through the channels I finally found something news-like. It was CNN. Some very young lady was sitting at a news desk. She must be new. Why else would she be on at this hour? What time is it anyway. As a rule I didn’t wear a watch. There were clocks all over the office so I didn’t need one there and if I was out and about, I would just look at my phone. My phone! A quick search confirmed it was not there, and neither was the thumb drive with the evidence of the computer hack. It had been in my pocket. Nice of them to leave my cash that was in there. A whole $37, yeah I’d get real far on that. But I did see the clock next to the bed reading 2:37. Grabbing the land line and was about to call Chase. That’s when I heard my name come from the TV set.

“... a nationwide manhunt is now underway for Denver Election Official Terry Parsons. He is listed as “a person of interest” in the murders yesterday of Assistant City Attorney Veronica Romero and fellow Elections Employee Kenton Bryson.”

“WHAT?!” Ronnie and Kent are dead?

“According to Colorado Secretary of State, Parsons was primarily responsible for the ballot counting in Denver. At this point, Denver Police are not calling Parsons a suspect, but they do warn anyone seeing him to not approach him, but to call 911. The FBI has been called in to assist with the manhunt on the assumption Parson might have fled the state.

“This all began a week ago with a series of break-ins in elections offices across Colorado, where ballots were stolen that were scheduled to be recounted in the razor-thin Republican primary to select a candidate to run for the open U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator Mike Andrews at the end of his term this year. Congressman Pete Richards was narrowly ahead of State Senator Bill McClaren going into the recount. The winner of that primary will face Democratic Congresswoman Dana Anthony in November.”

Then the screen cut to recorded footage of Gretchen, looking more haggard that I have ever seen her, and that’s saying something. “I don’t know what to think. Maybe he was involved, maybe he’s another victim who just hasn’t been found yet. But now that I think about it, he did make a couple of peculiar decisions before the attack on the Elections Building.”

“The situation first turned deadly when, of the offices broken into, Denver’s office was additionally targeted by a car bomb, and in El Paso County—which is where Colorado Springs is located—the County Clerk was killed during the break-in. FBI spokesperson Ivan Dodd would not speculate if Parsons might be wanted for that murder as well.

“Congressman Richards expressed his shock at violent turn of events and stated he emphatically had no role except for being on the ballot.
