“You have no clue as to the identity of the demon who attacked you in the bathroom?”

The disbelief in Dante’s voice made Matteo want to slap the man. He didn’t care that he was a priest, or that he was, technically Lucinda’s boss. Disrespect was disrespect, and that was what was happening right now.

“I don’t know if I brought the entity with me from New Orleans, or if it hitched a ride into the apartment when I magicked my luggage in.” Lucinda’s voice was strong. No matter what, she wouldn’t back down from accusations that Dante might throw at her.

“Did you think to try and capture him, question him?” Dante said. “You have the skills to do that, Lucinda.”

“I was caught off guard.” She picked up a cup of tea that Cata had prepared. “I didn’t expect trouble of this nature when I arrived. I was supposed to be searching for information on Tycroft. I didn’t know someone would try to drown me in a bathtub.”

Dante looked indifferent, and Matteo thought he would come out of his chair and slam his fist into the priest’s mouth.

“Tell me about the painting this Raphael told you about,” Dante said.

“Raphael was part of my mother’s coven,” Matteo said. He glanced over to where Berto sat. They hadn’t really had time to talk about their mother’s murder, and what it had to do with Tycroft. He and Dante hadn’t been out of the bedroom very long before Lucinda came out, looking as if she’d just stepped out of the shower.

Now she sat strong, facing Dante’s obvious anger. To Matteo the priest should be happy that Lucinda had taken matters into her own hands and was trying to get to the bottom of things.

“We don’t know much about the painting,” Lucinda said. “It supposedly contains the way to keep Tycroft’s idea from coming to light. But the painting is missing, and Raphael does not remember what was in it. After all, that was hundreds of years ago.”

“I want to meet with him.”

“He’s expecting us tomorrow morning,” Matteo said.

“I hope he doesn’t kill the demon before that,” Dante said. “There’s been enough going off the books and taking matters into your own hands here.”

It was almost as if Dante had slapped Lucinda in the face. He wondered if she would launch herself at her boss and scratch his eyes out.

“If you wanted a lackey to follow your orders and not think for herself you should have sent someone else,” Lucinda said. “I thought you knew me better than that, Dante.”

“I thought I did too, Lucinda.” Dante leaned forward in his chair. “You and I had a long talk about this being a reconnaissance mission, and that’s why I was only sending one witch. Then I hear you’re here killing demons and then bringing them back so you can question them and getting yourself half killed.”

Dante’s voice rose with each word, and Matteo thought the priest was going to bring down fire on the house.

“Well, I’m hungry,” Cata said as she shot out of her chair as if being fired out of a cannon.
