Chapter 14

JIM HELD THE LIBRARY card in his hand. “It couldn’t be this easy,” he said.

McNally bit his lip. “I hope it is.”

Jim grasped the top of the card and swiped it through the reader next to his computer.

Nothing.

“You sure he gave it to her?”

“Yup.”

Jim swiped it again. Nothing.

“It’s gotta work,” McNally breathed.

“Wait a minute.” Jim dropped the card on the desk and tapped the keyboard a while.

“What ‘cha doing?”

“You’ll see.”

Jim tapped some more then smiled. “Let’s try it now.”

“What did you do?”

“A new algorithm. Been working on it a while.” He grasped the card and said, “Here we go again.

He swiped the card and waited as the machine churned. It chirped a few moments then the screen sprang to life. Letters popped on the monitor: names, dates and addresses. McNally’s breath faltered. Jim’s face paled. They studied the readout a moment before turning to each other.

“My god,” Jim intoned, “if the authorities had gotten a hold of this, we would have been screwed.”

McNally nodded and turned back to the computer. He pushed the “down” arrow and scrolled farther down the list. “I didn’t know we had this many people in the organization.”

“Yeah,” Jim answered, “we probably shouldn’t read too much. We could compromise our status.”

“In a minute,” McNally interrupted, “I want to see what they’ve got on me.” He scrolled his way to the “M” section and found McNally. “McNally, David,” he read aloud. Written after his name was his last known address, international ID number, telephone number, aliases, phony addresses, last known activities, and a hyperlink to his photo. He stepped away from the computer. “We’re all compromised,” he said. He sighed and glanced at Jim. “What next?”

“I don’t know...” Already Jim was scrolling up the screen looking for his name. He found it. “This is bad.”

“We need to call Markey.”

Jim nodded and stepped towards the phone. He dialed the number and mumbled into the receiver. Then he handed the receiver to McNally.

“What’s the most wonderful time of the year?” Stout’s voice asked.

“Any time we’re together,” McNally answered.

Stout snickered then said, “You got news?”

“Yes. We found the list.”

“Where?”

“Encrypted on a library card.”

“Clever. Why didn’t you find it sooner?”

“Had to use one of Jimmie’s new algorithms to access it.”

“Ten extra points to you both,” sneered Stout.

McNally paused before speaking as if calculating whether what he was about to say would get him into trouble. He breathed deep before he said, “How many of these lists are in existence?”

Stout didn’t answer right away. Finally he spoke. “As far as we know, four. Markey sterilized the person who compiled it. He got the original off the computer before he destroyed it. The other two have been found and their mules killed. We feel we nipped this breach of information before it got a chance to bloom. Now all you have to do is complete your mission.”

“Complete my mission?”

“Yes. Destroy the card and kill the mule. Then we can move onto the next mission.”

“Kill the mule?” McNally repeated.

“Get it done before nightfall. I’ll send your instructions for the next mission via our normal route.
