Chapter 20

Hailey

“Oh my god! Dax, get off her.” I’m trying to hold back my laughter, but it spills out of me. I grab onto his shoulder to pull him up. He’s scowling at me as he stands, his breath coming hard from the adrenaline. Damn, he looks sexy as hell when he’s worked up. Not to mention he’s only in boxers right now.

“Take it out on me later, Muscle Man.” I wink. Dax deflates like a balloon, his green eyes sparking with fire. It makes me want to drag him back to the bedroom and do dirty, wicked things. Last night’s reunion wasn’t nearly enough to satisfy this craving I have for him.

I look over at Lizzy, who’s now standing and brushing off her pants. I should’ve known it was her in my apartment when Dax woke me up. No one else besides Diane would come in without me knowing.

“Well, that was exciting,” Lizzy drawls. Today, she has on turquoise glasses that match the streaks in her hair and an outfit I can only describe as women’s army fatigues, but thinner and with fewer pockets.

Dax and I return to my bedroom to throw on some clothes, him a pair of running shorts, and me some sweat pants and a T-shirt. We walk back into the kitchen as Lizzy sits at the counter. “I’m going to start some coffee while you explain why you broke into my apartment at”—I look at the clock over the oven—“seven a.m.”

Dax comes up behind me and grabs the water reservoir on my coffee maker as I grab the coffee from the cabinet above. “So, that’s Lizzy,” Dax whispers in my ear.

I look over at the breakfast bar where she’s sitting, scrolling through her phone like always. “That’s Lizzy.”

“Huh.”

“What’s that supposed to mean, Rambo?” Lizzy asks, continuing to read on her phone.

“For some reason, I pictured you to be a tall redhead with short, cropped hair. I was completely wrong.” Dax shrugs like it’s no big deal that he just admitted to being wrong about something.

Lizzy looks up from her phone to stare at Dax, seeming also to be surprised by his admission of being wrong. I guess when you see the worst of men every day, you can become a little jaded.

He brings the filled reservoir back to me, and I push the start button on the pot.

“Why didn’t you defend yourself?” Dax asks Lizzy.

“Because I wanted to see what kind of man you were.” At Dax’s frown, she continues. “Some men will take advantage of a situation to use unnecessary violence. There was no need to physically harm me because I wasn’t a threat to you. Men who enjoy violence wouldn’t have cared if I fought back or not. They’d have used excessive force to subdue me. You stopped.” She pauses. “I also didn’t want to embarrass you in front of Hails if I had to kick your ass.”

Dax laughs while I grin at Lizzy. She’s smaller than I am and lightning quick. She can take down a two-hundred-pound man in seconds.
