Chapter 19

For the next two days, Kage drove hard.

He slept very little as they traveled through the rest of Kansas, Colorado, and Utah. They ate and rested in the truck, only showing themselves in public at night. Someone had been following them for a few hundred miles, but Kage hadn’t said anything to Journey yet. He would eventually, but needed time to work a few things out in his head first.

It was possible she knew something wasn’t right, but to her credit, she’d done what she’d been told and hadn’t asked any questions. She’d been her usual chatty self until they hit the Nevada boarder, then…nothing. It worried him at first, but common sense—not his experience with women—finally helped him figure out what was bothering her. “You can still change your mind, you know,” Kage said, hoping it was the right thing. “You don’t have to confront your stepfather. I told you, I can—”

“No! I’m not changing my mind, Kage. And I’m not spending the rest of my life in hiding, no matter how easy it would be for you to make us disappear.”

He shrugged. “I just thought I’d throw it out there.”

“Why do you think I’d want to give up now?”

“You haven’t said a word in two hours, Journey. I know for a fact that’s a personal record.” He ignored the dirty look she threw at him. “I figured maybe you were afraid to tell me you’d changed your mind.”

“Well, I didn’t.”

“Then what’s up?”

Journey continued staring out the window. “What if we get close to my parents’ house and something happens? What if someone grabs me and takes me to my stepfather. What if you can’t get to me in time—”

“In time for what?”

She looked at him. “What if he has everything set up, Kage; the groom and a fake marriage license and some crooked justice of the peace willing to marry us at a moment’s notice? If I’m forced to get married, I’ll be trapped!”

“I won’t lie, Journey, anything’s possible. But we’ve traveled almost two thousand miles through nine states, and I haven’t let anything happen to you yet. Plus, you can handle a knife and shoot now. There’s a blade attached to your boot and you have a 9mm in your backpack, which you’ll keep on you every time we get out of the truck between here and California. You can protect yourself if I’m not around or can’t get to you fast enough.”

“But what if I can’t? Someone could knock me out and I wouldn’t be able to defend myself. By the time you found me, it might be too late.”

“Why are you all of a sudden so worried about this?”

“Because it could happen, Kage!”

“All right…yes, it could happen. But the chances are slim. I know what I’m doing.”

She sighed and turned back toward the window.

“This was what I hated about dealing with women. If you have something to say, why the hell don’t you just say it?”

“Fine. Why have we been running so hard the last two days?” she demanded.
