Chapter 16

Lacey

WHEN I WOKE up, I was alone. I got out of bed and glanced out of the crack in the blinds. It still looked early outside. In the past, I had always woken up before Travis. He didn’t wake me up when he left the room and that alone was suspicious. That would have required him to be quiet. That didn’t seem possible. The likelihood of me dreaming last night became more believable by the second.

Still pondering it, I walked out into the hallway and as always, kept my footsteps light. I could see Cameron sitting at the table with his back to me, eating eggs and reading some papers. He was always up before me. Even during these past few days when I’d try to wake up earlier than usual to take out any risk of seeing anyone, Cameron would always be eating, working, or come into the room five minutes after I got there with a bowl of cereal in his hands, signaling that I once again lost the unofficial race that was only in my mind to get up. I didn’t think he ever really slept.

“Good morning,” I said, as always. Now when I said it, I didn’t risk peeing my pants like the first time.

Immediately, Cameron sat up and looked at me in alarm as I passed him. He glanced down the hallway, eyes cautious and calculating before zeroing on me. I walked around the island that cut off the living room from the kitchen, trying to seem oblivious to his stare. I wasn’t going to let the person that allowed two young children in a gang scare me anymore. Okay, so I wasn’t going to let it show, was more appropriate.

I poured myself some cereal and as I was grabbing a spoon, I looked up to see his eyes still stuck to me. To be honest, he didn’t look intimidating at all right now. He looked like he had just seen a pig sprout a unicorn horn and gallop over the rainbow. I bit my lip to stop myself from calling him a freak.

“What?” I asked, not enjoying his gaze.

He stared at me for a few more seconds in silence. “Morning,” he replied but he still sounded unsure.

I mirrored his confused expression. Cameron had never returned the greeting, not once. So why now? I grabbed my things and slowly walked over to the table, keeping my eyes on him. Maybe he was planning to be nice right before he finally snapped and killed me. I kept my chin up as I walked. If he was going to kill me, then at least I would have my pride.

Taking the seat next to him where I normally sat, I tried to discreetly sit on the far edge of my seat and keep a distance from him. Mainly because he was still staring at me. I awkwardly pushed around my cereal with the spoon and took a few bites. Cameron went back to looking at his papers but I could tell he kept glancing up at me and it was bothersome.
