The plane touched down at KCI several hours later, and I went to my car and drove to my house. It was late, too late to go and and get the kids from Harper’s, so I just crashed in my bed.
The next day, I went to Harper’s to get the kids. Amelia was happy to see me, and Nate hung back a tiny bit, but he, too, looked like he was happy that I was home.
“Daddy,” Amelia said, rushing into my arms. I picked her up and she wrapped her arms around my neck. “How was your trip? Did you bring me stuff?”
“Of course,” I said, “I always bring you and Nate stuff. It’s all at home, I think that you’ll like it.”
“Hey dad,” Nate said. “Good to see you.”
I put my arm around him and he buried his face in my waist. He was getting so tall. His hair was getting a little wild, as it always did between haircuts, and I made a mental note to take him into the barber shop. “Good to see you too, kiddo. You didn’t give Harper any problems, did you?”
Harper appeared in the living room. “Hey, do you want to stay for breakfast? I’m making blueberry banana waffles. It’s kinda my specialty.”
“Sounds good,” I said. “You sure you made enough?”
“Of course. I knew you were coming, so I made extra.”
I went into the kitchen and got the plates out and helped her set the table. “Waffles are my favorite,” I said. “You know, when I was a kid, my mom would try to be a mom once in a great while, and she would make me waffles. I remember that like it was yesterday.”
Harper smiled. “You see, your memories of your mom weren’t all bad.”
“No, not all bad.” I cleared my throat. “And I’m going to have to go and see her soon.”
“That’s a good idea,” she said. “You know, your kids are pretty fond of your mother. I don’t know if you know that. Amelia talks about her, and so does Nate.” She nodded her head. “I think that it’s possible that you have a mental block when it comes to her and that maybe you don’t see her for who she really is.”
“The kids talk about her?”
“Yeah, they do. Amelia said that she thinks that her grandmother is, quote, hilarious, and Nate has taught me all the card games that your mother taught him. They do both say that she smells of cigarettes and stumbles around all the time, but they both seem to love her.”
“Well, I guess I should probably take the kids when I see her. But not this time, though. I have to talk to her about something serious.”
“Oh? Do you care to share?”
“No. I mean, I will, once I figure out what I need to figure out.” I shrugged as I set the table. “For now, though, I just really need to see her and ask her a few questions that I should have asked her a long, long time ago.
