Watch your back.
Multiple people warned me multiple times, and somehow, I had been so caught up in my thoughts and emotions that I hadnât even thought to glance over my shoulder, to take an alternate route home.
I mentally kicked myself as whoever had their arms around my body pulled me into the darkness of an abandoned shop, squeezing so tightly I thought they would break something.
I stomped with my foot, trying to hit something that would get them to loosen their grip, but found nothing. Elbowing, I struck nothing but air, and my movement was vastly restricted. Pulling from the sudden, flaring heat of my choker, I funneled the magic into my hands, planning on flooding the room with light to distract whoever snatched me long enough to dig my glowing fingers into his eyes. But before I could summon so much as a spark, pain, sharp and unrelenting, shot through my side.
My brain scrambled. I had no coherent thoughts except that I needed to get away.
A ripping, squelching sound reached my ears as something pulled itself from my flesh.
In a daze, it dawned on me; Iâd been stabbed.
No sooner had it sunk in, then the sharp, agonizing blade pierced through my abdomen again. Then twisted.
My screams were lost behind the gloved hand of my assailant.
If he spoke, I didnât hear it. Just the ragged breathing in my ear, the light grunt as he pulled out his wicked blade once more before plunging it inside me again, this time through my ribcage.
Sticky, wet heat spread through me. My world darkened, the pain so intense that I couldnât breathe. Or maybe it was because a lung was punctured.
The hands holding me upright fell away, and I dropped to my knees, my hands going to my abdomen. Three stab wounds. I couldnât breathe. Couldnât even scream now, even if I wanted to. All that came out was a gurgling sound. To my horror, I realized that my mouth was coated with blood. It was trickling past my lips. I spat, then slumped over.
I was going to die alone in an abandoned shop, where no one would find me for days.
Iâd failed Cleo. Failed myself.
Distantly, the sound of glass shattering slammed into my ears. A blast of cold wind ghosted over my trembling body. I couldnât feel my face or my hands. My blood was pouring onto the floor, streaming past my fingers as I tried to press them against two of the worst wounds.
I could. Not. Breathe.
The world darkened, and I heard a muffled scream as a body was thrown across the floor.
Then, someone dropped to their knees in front of me, pale hands hovering.
âNo, you donât,â a familiar voice growled with barely contained rage. âI am not reaping you tonight, Harper.â He put emphasis on my name, so harsh that it jolted me back to the present, to who knelt in front of me.
Apolloâs eyes were the darkest Iâd ever seen them, the cold obsidian seeping into my bones. I just wanted to lie down and sleep.
