Chapter Seven

Sam looked at Gabbie through narrowed eyes. “I don’t remember mentioning a disco,” he said, “but…” he shrugged his shoulders and grinned, “…who am I to complain!”

“Oh, I… Well, actually, Michael had some idea of going over the Bokas case,” replied Gabbie, feeling the need to stretch the truth a little, “and I felt I’d done enough work for one day—after all, it is my off-duty time, so I invented the disco.” She looked at Sam, biting her bottom lip anxiously. “I hope you don’t mind.”

“Of course not.” Sam’s grin spread across his good-natured face. “I don’t know why I didn’t think of it myself. That’s just what we’ll do—eat first in Heraklion and then enjoy ourselves at a disco. There’s a new one just opened called the Pink Parrot, and according to rumour their Pink Parrot cocktails are an absolute knockout!”

“Well, in that case, I shall definitely not allow you to drink one if we’re going on this thing.” Gabbie laughed, relieved that he’d taken it so well. They roared off down the winding road towards the sea, her hair streaming back in the wind, blowing all thoughts of Michael away.

Sam took her to Elounda, a little village a few miles from Aghios Nikolaos, parking the motorbike near two derelict stone windmills, their once distinctive circular sails now only rotting wooden spokes. He told her they were going to dive on and around Olous.

“Olous?” queried Gabbie, struggling into the flippers Sam passed to her.

“A sunken city,” he told her. “Of course, everything of real interest has been taken and put in the museum at Aghios Nikolaos, but you can still see the remains of the houses and streets, and some of the houses have beautiful mosaic floors.”

Never having snorkelled before, Gabbie listened carefully and forgot completely about Michael and the shattering kiss. Sitting on the warm rocks, she put on her mask, and with some trepidation lowered herself into the tranquil sea. There was a gentle swell—nothing to worry about, Sam said—and Gabbie felt as if the sea were breathing, as she was gently lifted and then fell with the movement of the clear green water. Gripping the mouthpiece of the snorkel firmly between her teeth, she lowered her face into the sea.

It was a new silent world; minute particles of minerals glinted in the smooth sand of the bottom as they swam silently along, and soon Sam was pointing out the ruins they had come to see—stone walls, paved streets and mosaics depicting fishes and birds—a drowned city from long ago. Gabbie wondered about the people who had once lived there; it seemed eerie looking down on the remains of their world, almost as if they were prying into something private. After what seemed to Gabbie a very short while, Sam indicated to her that they should surface.

“We should get out now,” he said as soon as their heads were above water, “you’ve been in quite a long while for a novice.”

“Oh!” Gabbie protested, disappointed that it was over so soon.
