Chapter Twelve

Crystal awoke in decent spirits the morning of the second bracelet ceremony. Kenny the monkey grinned at her from opposite the bed, and she sighed. Kissed the creature on the forehead. She had not seen Gene the past two days, although she looked for the light in Gene’s trailer at night. No one volunteered the producer’s whereabouts, and Crystal did not ask. Gene would be at the ceremony tonight; she had to be. Crystal looked forward to seeing her, even if they could do nothing about their feelings for each other.

The past day had passed painfully slow. Crystal had a five-on-one date, and the group went to plant trees for an environmental event. Crystal struggled through makeout sessions with two of the women: Quartz and Brady. Van had been on the date, but more or less stayed away from Crystal. As for Anna-Louise, she and Crystal kissed a couple of times—relatively chastely. Enough for Crystal to feel the rough, masculine skin of Anna-Louise’s face.

Crystal had gone through the engagement rings section in the catalog. Her favorite was a simple gold band with a diamond. She had no need for pretensions and excess, and this ring spoke to her. It felt more right for her than any of the contestants did. She wished Gene could have helped her pick it out.

“Hey,” Dallas said at five p.m. when he showed up to escort Crystal to the contestants’ residence for the ceremony. “Looking good!”

“Thank you.” Marge, the stylist and wardrobe consultant, had piled Crystal’s hair atop her head in a retro 1960s do. “Hey, where’s Gene? I didn’t see her yesterday.”

“Oh, Gene’s around. She’s dealing with an emergency with Rainbow World bigwigs. She can’t be here tonight, but you’ll see her tomorrow.”

“Hmm. Okay.” Clearly, Gene meant it when she said she and Crystal could have little to do with each other. It hurt. Best not to think about it.

Dallas handed Crystal a list. “The eight women we want you to keep. Any problems?”

“Eight? I thought it was ten.”

“Nine, actually,” Dallas said. “Remember Mallory and Marie Osmond?”

“Oh yeah. So what about the ninth woman?”

Dallas gave a mysterious smile. “You’ll see.”

Rowena

Quartz

Dolores

Wilhelmina

Van

Dolly

Lourdes

(long pause) Anna-Louise

More Van. Eh. Blah. “These women are fine,” Crystal said, wondering if Dallas thought she was stupid. Nine women instead of ten meant they were bringing on a surprise contestant. Someone from her past, like Kathleen on Zara’s season. Problem was, no one in Crystal’s life rose to that level of love. She had no secret husbands in the closet, and her best friend, Davina, was happily married and certainly harbored no crush on her.

Someone from Zara’s season, then. A fan favorite. Perhaps Andy. Crystal wouldn’t mind Andy popping in; she was fun, easy on the eyes.

The bracelet ceremony passed without incident, and Crystal was in bed by midnight. At five a.m., a thought awoke her:

What if GENE was the new contestant?

Crystal laughed out loud. No way. But, Lord, she’d be glad to see Gene again. She missed the woman something fierce. Too bad Gene was completely and totally done with her.
