Dayton hadn’t been prepared for this. She and Anya had been partnered today in the challenge, and they’d come in last place. However, Anya had earned herself immunity in the previous challenge, meaning she could not be sent home. The next lowest-ranked team had been David and Charles. The newbies got to vote, and they sent David into the trial with Dayton.

“Welcome to the trial. Tonight, Dayton and David, from the OGs, will do battle in their final trial to remain in the competition. In front of both of them, there’s a twenty-foot pole. They’ll be given two hand or foot posts. When I say go, they’ll have to place and then move those posts as they climb to the top of the pole. When they get there, they must ring the bell and then come down. The first person to make it all the way back down the pole and run to the bell on the ground and ring it, wins and remains in the competition.”

David was a big dude, but Dayton had always been a good climber. They’d taken trips to the Angeles Forest, Big Bear, and even Tahoe as a kid, and she had climbed trees back then. She had also taken up rock climbing a few years ago and was more than ready for this trial. When Dayton glanced over at Cali, who was standing behind the railing, the woman was biting her nails, with a camera aimed at her face. Dayton chose to take that nail-biting as a compliment.

As soon as Ryan yelled for them to start climbing, Dayton took off. She placed one post in a good spot for her foot and the other as high as she could reach. She continued to do that until she was halfway up, glancing over at David.

“Hey! Don’t look at him! Climb, Dayton!” the yell came from Cali, and it wasn’t a request. It was an order. “Dayton, climb. Go!”

Dayton did as she was told. She didn’t look over at David until she heard his bell ring. She rang hers right after, and realizing something about the rules, she moved a post to a reasonable spot for her foot, looked down, and decided to risk it. She jumped.

“Oh, my God!”

That was Cali, too, which made Dayton smile when her butt hit the somewhat cushy sand. Ryan hadn’t said they had to use the posts on the way down. She got up, ran the few feet to the remaining bell, and rang it, winning the trial.

“What the hell? She can’t do that!” David snapped just as his feet hit the ground.

“He didn’t say I had to use them going down,” Dayton defended.

“She’s right, David. I didn’t. Dayton won fair and square.”

The rest of the cast came over to console David after Dayton shook his hand. Dayton turned around to see Cali standing behind her, and she could have sworn she saw the woman’s body visibly relax.

“I’m glad you’re staying,” Cali said when they got back to the house.
