Even though the house was empty, I glanced down the hallway before sharing the details of the night before with Hazel. I propped my phone against the fruit bowl as I lowered myself into the seat at the kitchen table. I spilled all the details of my night with Mitchell.
âSo, you actually went through with it? How are you feeling about it?â Hazel asked through the phone. In the background of the video call, I could see her office, all the legal books behind her. Normally, she shared the space with three other paralegals, but they were out for lunch as a team. Hazel opted to eat at her desk so we could discuss what went down.
âIt was pretty awesome. Like, he asked questions and communicated and it was different,â I said between mouthfuls of cereal. It wasnât a substantial lunch, but I had too much nervous energy to stand at the stove for any amount of time.
Hazel looked up from her own lunch, pointed at me through the screen and said, âDifferent? What do you mean different? I thought you were just looking for some fun.â
âIt is. This is fun.â
âOh no.â
âOh no what?â I asked, putting my spoon into the bowl. âIt was one night. It was just passing the time.â
Hazel tilted her head while looking at me through the phone screen. âNo, youâre right back in it, arenât you? I should have known better than suggesting you sleep with your high school crush.â
âHeâs not the guy I had a crush on in high school though. Not exactly.â I knew it was a weak defense, but I believed it. When I looked at Mitchell, I didnât see Lucasâ friend or the guy in high school who everyone knew would get famous one day. âHeâs different than before.â
Hazel leaned into the camera on her phone. She got so close her pores were visible through the screen. âYouâre gonna get hurt.â
âFirst of all, it was one night. Secondly, there isnât enough time to get hurt. In a few days, the wedding will come and go and weâll go back to our old lives.â I sighed at the thought. âAnd I need to have my fun now. In a couple months Iâll be moving all my shit back into this house where I will inevitably die alone. And if Iâm going to give up everything to move back here, Hazel, I deserve this. I deserve to have a little fun before I really have to buckle down.â
âSo, this thing with Mitchell is just for fun?â
âYes. One hundred percent, just for fun before I die alone in this town.â
Hazel rolled her eyes at my dramatics. âYou need to tell your parents you donât want to move back.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I think thatâs a conversation you need to have with them. Let them know why youâre coming home and what youâre leaving behind. They assume you want to come home, that you need them. And if you want to help them, there might be a way to compromise.
