Chapter Twenty
Ronan arrived home at four in the morning. He hoped to get in three, maybe four hours of sleep before he headed over to his Grandmaâs house to help with New Yearâs Day dinner.
Thank God, he managed to get away with a quick once over from the paramedics at the scene of the fire or he would still be hung up at the hospital with paperwork and a pointless exam.
The lock clicked over on his front door as he turned the key. It had been the best and worst New Yearâs Eve of his life.
The fire at the bar looked a hell of a lot like the garage fire they had put out earlier that day. Gasoline. He would have to phone Keith and tell him about Janisâs theory, about a fireman starting the fire. Or one who didnât make the cut.
âHi.â
Ronan whirled to face his sister. âJesus, Kelly Ann.â
âSorry. Didnât mean to scare you.â His sister lay curled up on his couch, bundled in the blanket he kept there for nights he was too damn tired to make it to bed. Two empty beer bottles sat on the coffee table. Diego.
He hung his jacket up on the back of the door and crossed to the couch to sit beside her. She snuggled up against his side, and he didnât hesitate to wrap her in his arms.
âWhatâs going on? Are you all right?â he asked.
âIâm fine.â She looked up at him with those big, innocent eyes.
âKel. Talk to me.â
âI wanted to make sure you were okay. We dropped Cara off, then Diego heard about the fire from one of his friends at the station. We drove back and saw the guys from the other crew spraying water on Andieâs. I called you, but your phone wasnât on. The ambulances were gone, and I drove to the hospital, but they said you hadnât checked in. So I came here and waited.â
âWhereâs Diego?â Ronan asked.
âHe stayed with me for an hour or so, then took a cab home.â She smiled. âHe says he owes you a few beers.â
Ronan raised an eyebrow.
Kelly Ann smacked his leg. âHe was a gentleman.â
âMm hmm.â He squeezed her hand. âIâm sorry I worried you. Iâm okay. Promise.â
âDonât lie, Ronan.â
He released a breath. âWell, my back is sore, but itâs nothing I canât handle.â
âDid they give you something for the pain at the hospital?â she asked.
âDonât worry about me,â he said. âYou girls have a good night? Besides the obvious ending.â
âWe did. Oh, and I think Cara likes Mike.â
Ronan snorted. âAll the girls like Mike.â
She bit her lip. âI donât.â
Ronan lifted a brow. âWant to tell me about that?â
A five-alarm blush appeared on her cheeks and she dropped her face to his shoulder. âDiego kissed me at midnight.â
âI figured.â But he didnât love the idea.
âYou probably didnât notice. You were tonsils deep with Alison.â
Ronan took a moment to savor the memory. âDonât change the subject.â
âI like him, Ronan.â
He nodded. âI know you do.â
She met his gaze. âWhy
