Razor sat in a silent sulk, enduring the rattling and creaking, and barely conscious of time until he felt the car slowing. He looked up as Kev pulled into a lay-by on an unlit road. Two vehicles were already there—a smart black car and a battered pickup truck.

‘Why stop here?’ asked Razor, leaning between the seats.

‘Because of that,’ said Kev, pointing at the gleaming black BMW. ‘I thought I recognised it—it’s Kane Cullum’s. What’s he doing out here?’

Razor had seen it before too—it was the one from the car park. He was about to say something when bright flashes in the fields distracted him. ‘What are those?’

‘Poachers’ lamps,’ said Kev.

‘What are they used for?’

‘Poaching.’

‘Don’t they scare everything away?’

‘No, they use them to dazzle targets, so they’re easy to pick off.’

A not-too-distant crack made them both jump.

‘What was that?’ asked Razor, though he could guess.

‘A rifle shot, mate. We’d better get out of here.’

‘But they wouldn’t shoot at us, would they? At least not on purpose.’

‘I wouldn’t put it past them. Cousin Gary may be a swine, but he’s a pussycat compared to Kane and Liam Cullum. They are psychos.’

‘Liam from the park? But he turned out to be a pushover,’ said Razor, with a cold laugh. ‘And I’ve had a couple of run-ins with Kane too, though I didn’t know his name until now. He was in the multistorey before the fight—I suspect he’d been selling drugs to those lads.’

Kev pulled out of the lay-by. Distant street lights glowed in the direction they were heading. ‘The pair of them are dangerous—I once saw Kane use an arm torn from a mannequin to knock out a shop assistant who wouldn’t stop serving someone else.’

‘Sounds like a right charmer.’

‘That’s the strange thing, mate. Both of them could be when it suited them. They’d lull you into thinking they were friendly and harmless, but then something would set them off. Kane has more in the way of brains and usually gets away with it, but Liam’s police record was as long as your inside leg.’

‘Was?’

‘He came to a sticky end in Glevchester.’

‘The bloke in the newspapers?’

‘The same. Malignant death took him, and although I cannot rejoice when such a man dies, neither will I grieve. The world is a safer place without him.’

‘It’s strange him being killed so soon after we ran into him,’ said Razor trying to feel jealous of the deceased. ‘Have they found out who did it yet?’

‘Not so far as I know. There is a rumour of a mysterious black-cloaked demon being spotted near the crime scene, but the source of that is somewhat dubious.’

‘The homeless man?’

‘Yeah… how do you know?’ asked Kev, but before Razor could reply, he made a strange sound, one part exasperation, two parts fear. ‘There’s a car following us.’

‘So what?’ said Razor. ‘That’s what cars do.’

‘This one’s coming fast and the road’s been almost empty.’

‘Still…’

‘I know,’ said Kev, ‘it may be a false alarm, but there’s something about the headlights… I’ve a feeling it’s…’

‘Kane?’ Razor suggested.
