CHAPTER EIGHT
THE Mercedes moved smoothly beneath his hands, the thick
leather cool beneath his jean-clad thighs. Although he knew
it was crazy, and he was quite aware that he was breaking
the speed limit, he let the powerful vehicle make its own
pace, the road passing beneath the big car's wheels at an
ever-increasing rate.
It felt so good to be out on his own, away from Rose Chen's
cloying presence, and if it wasn't really her fault that he felt this way it was easier to blame her than acknowledge what
was really wrong with him.
Yet he was acknowledging it, Oliver thought drily. By just
being on the road, heading for Sutton Magna, he was tacitly
accepting that the reason for his uncertain temper was a cool
almost-blonde temptress, whose eyes and lips, and lush,
golden body, were threatening his hard-won impassivity.
He could imagine how Lightfoot would react if he knew his
errant operative was in danger of blowing the whole deal on
account of his hormones. If he even suspected that Oliver
was risking the relationship he had built up with Rose Chen
because he could think of little else but burying his aching
sex in another woman's slick moist sheath, he'd have a
seizure.
But God, it was years since he'd lain awake nights, imagining
how it would feel to make it with some special woman. Hell,
he'd been a kid when that happened, still bemused by his own
feelings, and eager to lay every chick in sight. Until Louise, and that abortive teenage marriage, that had taught him there
was more to a relationship than relieving his frustration. He
was too wise now to act like a lovesick moron; too old to
have wet dreams.
The fact remained, he was risking everything for a woman
who hated his guts. Or acted as if she did, anyway. A woman
who was already involved with another man. And that man,
moreover, who was one of the prime suspects in his
investigation.
He thumped the wheel with the flat of his hand, his jaw
hardening as he unwillingly considered the facts of the case
again. If Robert Hastings wasn't involved, then he was more
sinned against than sinning. But could he really be that
naive? He was James Hastings' son, for pity's sake! Who
should have been more equipped to take his father's place
than his only son? The twins were obviously too young, and
there was no one else. Except Rose...
Oliver's mouth compressed. So far, he had no real evidence
to connect Rose Chen to the operation. But, unlike her
half-brother, there was nothing naive about her, and Oliver
had no doubt now that she had been involved. Was still
involved, for all he knew.
For instance, he suspected she was the only one, apart from
James Hastings himself, who knew what was on the
computer disk he had seen her reading after the office was
closed the other evening. He'd only glimpsed its contents
from a distance, but it had looked like a spreadsheet. He
guessed it contained at least some of the information he was
looking for. If only he'd had the chance to read it.
Chance, he mused wryly. So much of life—so much of his
work—relied on chance, and he was a great believer in
taking whatever was offered you.
