Chapter Fourteen

I backed against the tree where Alarick had pinned me, my fingers clutching the bark behind me as if it could anchor me. Absurdly, I wished for Alarick to appear again. Sparring with him was better than whatever else was in these woods.

The fog parted, and a familiar figure stepped through. I let out a breath of such relief I almost collapsed on the ground.

“Viktor,” I said. “Oh my god, you scared me. What are you doing out here?”

He looked almost as startled as I felt, but the expression quickly changed to match my own relief. “There you are,” he said. “I was looking for you.”

“Really?” I asked, then realized how desperate and fangirlish I sounded, like I’d hoped he would come after me. I hadn’t. I’d just sent the text in case I disappeared.

“Yeah,” he said. “Why else would I be out here, trespassing where I don’t belong and I’m not wanted?”

I realized then that my question had come across as incredulous to his ears. He thought I didn’t believe that’s why he was in the woods. I wasn’t actually sure what I thought. He’d looked startled when he saw me, but maybe just because he’d seen nothing but trees, and then suddenly I’d appeared through the fog just as he’d appeared to me. Or maybe he’d been in the woods for some other reason…

“You didn’t have to do that,” I said. “I didn’t mean for you to do that.”

“I was—we were worried about you.”

“Well, thanks,” I said. “I’m fine. But let’s go back. This fog is even creepier than the woods.”

I wasn’t sure if Viktor was part of the reason I felt so cold and jumpy, or if it was just the woods, the fog, and Alarick’s warnings. I just knew that I was done with playing psychic detective for the day, and that I wanted to get out of there as fast as possible.

“You said you wouldn’t follow him,” Viktor said as we started back toward the academy. Despite the fog, I was sure of exactly where to go. My internal compass never failed me.

“I know,” I said. “I just… I got in a fight with Delilah, and I needed to clear my head.” I felt bad lying to him, and I wasn’t even sure why I didn’t want him to know I’d talked to Alarick. Maybe just because he’d be mad, and he hated Alarick, but I wasn’t sure. At least part of what I’d said was true. I had fought with Delilah, and that’s what had made me change my mind about following Donovan.

I waited for Viktor to lecture me, to tell me all the things the dean had said. The things Delilah and everyone else seemed to believe. I’d been trespassing, and the Wolf family was prominent, and if anything happened to me, they’d be justified in whatever they did. Even if I found something, no one would believe me. That if I didn’t fall in line, I was asking for it, and did I have a death wish?

But he didn’t.
