We followed Ronan back into the castle’s dark belly, wandering down hallways and staircases until we came to a large lounge.

The room could easily have fit a hundred people. It’s tall and ornate ceilings sat high above us, and old oil paintings in gilded frames covered the oak-paneled walls. A large fire crackled away. Ronan ushered us over to the fire so I could warm up again. I picked the closest chair and held my hands up to the fire, already grateful for the warmth.

Ronan sat down on the couch opposite to me, while Xander and Victor approached a pool table and started playing. I looked over my shoulder and saw Shadow waiting by the door, his black eyes fixed on me alone. I shuddered and turned back to face the others.

“Perhaps I owe you an apology,” Ronan said to me. “I underestimated you entirely, and for that I was a fool.”

I didn’t understand. I had escaped, trashed one of his stolen jets and now he was apologizing to me?

“This is all very new to me,” I said. What else could I say?

“Seems like drinking isn’t new to you,” Victor laughed from the pool table. “Damn. No one has ever drunk me under the table before. It barely seemed to touch you.”

“My tribe specializes in brewing Hangza,” I explained. “I have developed a tolerance to the stuff over the years. And I tricked you. I didn’t drink anything after the shots. The waterfall game was entirely rigged.”

He tongued his cheek, amused and annoyed with himself at the same time. “Well, bravo,” he repeated. He leaned over the table and potted a ball. “It took brains to escape this place.”

“That is why you chose, Victor,” Ronan said. “Right? You were planning this from the start.”

“Can you blame me? I was thrown in the deep end a little. This all still feels like one crazy daydream.”

“As long as it’s a daydream and not a nightmare,” Xander quipped as he took his own turn over the pool table.

He was joking, but he also made a good point. This whole arrangement had felt like a nightmare at first, but it was starting to feel more normal with each new day. Even now I felt comfortable sitting there with them, but it felt strange that this was so easy.

“The important thing is that you’re safe,” Ronan said. “And you managed to form a bond with Xander while you were gone, which is also a plus.” He looked at Ronan and Xander. “I don’t know about you guys, but my mind is feeling clearer than ever. It feels clearer each time Lily forges a bond with one of us.”

“I too feel much sharper, much like my old self,” Xander said.

Victor cue’s cracked as he potted two more balls. “Shit, I’m even getting better at pool. I’ve sucked for ages. I’m feeling it too.”

Their eyes wandered back to Shadow, who was still standing in the doorway, his eyes fixed on me. I could see his breath laboring, and his body twitching, looking as though it wanted to surge forwards.
