A round of sarcastic applause greeted Sean when he arrived at the fire station. The guys stood in the large garage, door open, gleaming red trucks behind them.
“Give it up for the hero!” Casey yelled out.
Whistles and catcalls ensued, and Sean laughed. “Okay, guys, very funny.”
“He singlehandedly puts out fires and saves our citizens,” Ruiz chimed in. “Quite the Superman figure.”
“Fireman,” someone said in a mock narrator tone, “coming to a theater near you!”
“I never said I did it alone,” Sean said. “The whole crew was there, and I was very clear about that.”
Davis smacked a rolled-up newspaper against his chest and let go when Sean grabbed it. “In all honesty, you made us look good,” he said.
“Nice work,” Ruiz said with a nod.
One by one, they congratulated him before heading off to focus on their duties. Sean unrolled the newspaper, surprised to see the photo was from that first meal at the bowling alley. Carly had her arms wrapped around his waist, beaming up at him while Heather looked on with a soft smile on her face. The headline read in large, block text: RESCUED. Under that, in smaller type, it read: Girl endangered by fire reunites with firefighter, paramedic who came to her aid.
Sean flipped open the paper, but he found only one more photo, this one of Jace and Carly both looking mischievous as they laughed together. Sean didn’t remember that moment, but then his head had been a mess during that dinner. He’d been disconcerted by his feelings for Jace, paranoid about Carly’s innocent question as to whether they were boyfriends. He was sure there was a label blazing on him, like in that book he’d read in high school, The Scarlet Letter. Only his would be a big J, for slept with Jace, or something ridiculous.
Sean laughed to himself, just thinking of it. He did wonder why The Sentinel waited so long to run this story. Then he noticed the label: Part 1 of Rapid Response? An in-depth look at emergency services in the region.
Sean skimmed the first few paragraphs, detailing the events of the fire, the rescue, and their first meeting afterward, where Heather thanked them for saving her daughter. About halfway through, he found the paragraph he’d been searching for:
