Langley is out of eyesight in one hard rev of her cruiser’s engine.

The midnight air is cool, the day’s heat having finally evaporated.

I don’t know what makes me do it. As Tad leans in to open the door to his car, I reach down and grab his hand.

He looks up at me. His eyes are bright blue and full of surprise and of something else. Something that I wanted—needed—to see. He’s back. My Tad is back.

He smiles weakly and squeezes my fingers. His thumb caresses the inside of my hand.

“Well, hot damn. Always in trouble, aren’t we, Skittles?”

I can’t reply, not with the electric little circles he’s making on my palm. Where did he learn to do that? I was supposed to be consoling him. I choke out, “Careful out there?”

“I’m always careful.”

And it’s true. He’s the cautious one, while I’m the one forever barreling headfirst into danger. Except this time. Somehow this time, danger caught him first. I’m not okay with that. I want him to be safe. I need him to be safe.

What does he see when he looks into my eyes? Does he understand how I need him? How my life’s expendable, but his...I want him to live long and happily. If I could, I’d go back in time and tell his five-year-old self not to take the oath. How can a five-year-old know what they’re getting into? It isn’t fair.

“In Sa’ied’s journal,” Tad says, still holding my hand, filling my stomach with a pool of warmth that’s growing more and more molten by the second, “he ends every note to his friend with one word: Lifespeed.” His skin is warm. Blood pulses hard in his fingertips.

My grin feels forced. What I want to do is hold him. “As in ‘Godspeed’? Like in the stories?”

“Yeah, for luck.”

“Cheesy.” I scrunch my nose.

“You know me.”

“I do...Cheesy it is. Lifespeed, Tad.”

“Lifespeed, Emily.”

Still, I don’t let go of his hand.

And then, because we have to, because we drove separately and we have to get to the square and start the damn spell, and because I’m a Ranger and he’s my Sight and I’m crazy for even thinking that what I’m seeing in his eyes is anything other than High Order devotion—

—I let my fingers slip from his, turn, and walk back to my car.
