Chapter 34

Winter pulled into a church parking lot, checked three names off his interview list and jotted down a few notes on his lack of success. There were still a lot of names.

His phone rang. The guy on the other end, Vernon Black, was a retired Marine who worked at the regional airport. “I’ve been watching the monitors on the parking lots like you asked. Car just drove in, matches that license plate you gave me.”

Winters had to think for a second, not remembering which plate he had asked Vernon about. Funny, it was only a few days ago they had spoken. “Remind me?”

“Lexus sedan?” Black gave him the plate number, using the military alphabet.

It finally clicked for Winter. It belonged to LaChance, the guy who had found Hennig’s body at the Carter house. “When did he get there?”

“Twenty minutes ago. I was out, just rolled in and was catching up on the recording. What should I do?”

Winter didn’t doubt the man’s intent or ability, but Black had lost both legs to an IED. “You got a security guy doing rounds?”

“He’s over at the garage. Want me to get him?”

“Just alert him for now. The guy in the car has an assault on his record. Are there any flights scheduled to go out soon?”

“We only run eight public flights a day. The next one isn’t for two hours.”

“Private?”

“I’ll check, take me a few.”

“Thanks, call me back. Expect company.”
