Chapter Eleven

With his gaze fixed straight ahead, his jaw set and both hands gripping the wheel, Adam was more tense than Jenny had ever seen him. He was in an awful mood. All because he’d stopped by to help her with the generator—help she hadn’t even asked for.

At this point, she wasn’t sure how she felt about Adam. Watching him wrestle the heavy piece of equipment from the shed, his biceps bunching, T-shirt stretching across his broad back… Jenny stifled a sigh. He was by far the strongest, physically fit man she’d ever known. But his mood shifts were confusing. When he wasn’t abrupt and aggravated with her, she’d catch him looking at her, his blue eyes hooded and hungry. In those moments, her body had responded as if he’d caressed her, and she wanted him as she’d never desired a man. Five seconds later, he was snapping at her.

Then again, what did it matter what he thought of her when getting involved with Adam Dawson was not an option?

He didn’t so much as glance at her until he pulled into the school driveway. His brows drew together in a scowl.

Jenny let out an irritated sigh. “What’s wrong now, Adam?”

“I don’t know what you mean.” Jaw set, he rolled to a stop.

Refusing to leave the truck until they cleared the air, Jenny flipped the power locks on her side of the truck.

Adam could’ve unlocked them, but didn’t. “What’d you do that for?”

“You’re so tense, you’re making me tense. You’re put out with me, and not because you volunteered to help with the generators. What’s going on?”

“Let it be, will you?”

Jenny crossed her arms and shook her head.

“Brother, you’re stubborn.” He gave her a wary look. “You’ll get mad.”

“I’m already halfway there because of your bad mood.” She raised her eyebrows. “Talk to me, Adam.”

He scrubbed his hand over his face, then exhaled. “All right, all right. It’s about the night of the dance, when you ran away.”

“I did no such thing! It was late, and I needed to go home. And so did you, remember? The rain and possible flooding?”

“You never even said goodbye. There’s more to your behavior than wanting to get home. A lot more, and we both know it.”

Jenny rolled her eyes. Why hadn’t she seen this coming? Because until this moment, the subject hadn’t come up, and she’d assumed Adam had let it go. Wrong.

Her heart stuttered in her chest, and her hands went ice-cold, but she managed to hide her mounting panic under a calm facade. “It was a long time ago—hardly worth talking about,” she replied in what she thought was a quite reasonable tone. “Besides, didn’t we both agree that our pasts should stay in the past?”

“What’d I tell you—you’re all riled up.”

Apparently she hadn’t sounded so reasonable. What could she say to that?

“I’m right there with you,” Adam went on.
