CHAPTER 17

With reluctant steps, he approached the Cantina and the intense ordeal he faced. Entering, he took a small table with seating for two. It was covered with woven material, reflecting the wild color of Mexican décor. He removed the Silver Beaver he wore and set it on the side. It'd been Harvey's and he worried only slightly that the Saldana woman might recognize it. The air felt cool as it dried his temples and the slick, dampened black hair where the hat had rested. Tensed, he waited for the seductive attentions headed his way.

"Ah, senor, what is your pleasure?" Heavy, sensual perfume preceded the soft, ingratiating voice at his elbow. He looked up into two dark pools of heated seduction and felt an icy shock slither through his gut. He also recognized the lone erring Harvey had left in his saddle bag. The lovely Mercedes wore both of those damning earrings and moved her head a little extra so the tiny bells tinkled softly. She stood before him wearing the evidence that proved she'd had a hand in Harvey Bradshaw's murder.

"La especial, por favor, mi senorita," Reed answered and, acting on his purpose, he looked deeply into her eyes.

The unwelcome surge of his pulses sang through his body as he surveyed the voluptuous beauty, her bosom heaving. My God, what a lovely devil, she is!

She bent low over his table to retrieve the menu and gave him a full and lingering look at the rounded mounds of her lovely breasts. He took in the scent of the deep, musky perfume emanating from her clothes and soft, warm, inviting body, some that came from her flesh, and some from a bottle.

She was unbelievably exciting, downright intoxicating to a man long denied the comfort of a woman's body. His pulses raced and he felt it in his throat, his belly, his groin, and his increasingly shortened breath.

She sauntered away, her swaying hips promising everything within a man's imagination and beyond. Reed shook his head, remembering his purpose. This woman could tempt that goddamned snake out of the Garden of Eden.

He wanted to laugh at his foolish male self as he remembered the bleeding and dying body of Harvey Bradshaw. Those memories dashed ice water on his heated response to Mercedes and helped him get a grip on his wayward thoughts. He steeled himself inwardly to do battle with a cold and deadly reptile, wonderfully disguised as a warm and desirable female.

In time, she brought his heavily laden plate and set it before him. "Here is for you, senor." Her voice went singing into him and set his male heart racing. She flashed her full bosom before him once again when she poured him a cup of the thick, dark, Mexican-style coffee. "You like dance, senor?" she cooed softly.

He shot her an intense look of appreciation. "Might be persuaded."

With a sex-laden smile from his lips that he hoped might curl her oversexed toes, he turned to his plate. Ignored, for the moment, she sniffed and undulated away to attend another table.
