CHAPTER NINETEEN

RUSH

The house was quiet when I walked inside but the lights were on and the front door had been unlocked. My keys clattered as I tossed them on the console table.

“Faye?” I called without an answer.

Her Explorer wasn’t parked on the street, and she was supposed to have a shift at Dolly’s. She usually worked on Tuesdays.

“Hello?” Nothing.

I’d been the first to leave the house this morning, and someone, probably Mav, had forgotten to lock up. It wasn’t the first time, and I doubted it would be the last. It hadn’t bothered me before now, but with Faye living here, we couldn’t leave the place unlocked. I’d have to talk to him about it when he got home from campus.

Tuesdays were our nights to study and rest. We’d only had a brief meeting for practice, and I’d gone in early this morning to work out. When I’d left the fieldhouse twenty minutes ago, Maverick and Erik had still been hunched over their textbooks in the study hall.

I walked to the dining room table, dropping my backpack onto a chair, then unzipped my coat and hung it on a hook before toeing off my shoes.

It was still early, only nine, but I was ready to crash. I hadn’t slept much last night, not after that fight with Faye.

She thought I was appalled with her. What the hell?

Where had she gotten that idea? I’d asked her out to dinner, but when she’d asked me if it was a date, I hadn’t wanted her to feel pressured. I mean, it could have been a date. I wanted it to be a date.

Maybe I should have just asked her out, put myself out there and gone for it.

Maybe she needed to know that I thought about her more than was healthy.

I constantly wondered what she was doing and how she was feeling. I woke up with a raging hard-on in the middle of the night and wrapped a hand around my dick, picturing her face when I came all over my stomach. I’d folded her laundry last night when it had been finished and contemplated putting it all in my closet so she’d have to step into my room again.

This thing—I wouldn’t let myself call it what it really was, an obsession—wasn’t because of the baby. The way she plagued my thoughts, the way she got under my skin, was all Faye.

And she thought I was appalled at the idea of a date.

What a cluster.

I scrubbed a hand over my face and yawned, then headed upstairs. On the drive home, I’d almost gone to Dolly’s. It had been a while since I’d shown up at the diner. But with the way Faye and I snapped at each other these days, I wasn’t sure how she’d take a visit. And I was too damn exhausted to fight tonight.

The door to my bedroom was cracked. I pushed it open, unbuttoning my jeans so I could crawl into bed, except my bed wasn’t empty.

“What the fuck?”
