CHAPTER 19

I spoke with Kelly several more times that week, both before and after school. And each time we spoke, she was more and more adamant that I needed to go see Daniel that weekend. He had become very important to her. I didn’t know why, but I suspected he represented the possibility to Kelly that not all men were assholes. Perhaps he was more of a project. To me, Daniel was a handsome mystery who deserved a little sunshine in his gloomy forest hideout. I wanted him to be all right. No one should be abandoned. I finally agreed to do what Kelly asked and go visit him for both of us.

However, that did not mean I wasn’t nervous as a cat on espresso shots as I crouched down and walked through the tunnel beneath the on ramp that Saturday afternoon. Had anyone seen me going behind the houses carrying a McDonald’s bag? Had anyone followed me or called Cynthia to report my strange activity? Had anyone walked through the trees after me and watched me take the boards off the tunnel entrance?

About midway through the tunnel, I stopped being nervous about where I’d been. I started getting nervous for what awaited me at the other end of the tunnel. This is the part that had kept me awake the night before. I was still two months shy of my fifteenth birthday and here I was, going to meet a semi-wild, mostly strange young man in the woods. There would be no telephone, no way for anyone to hear me if I screamed for help. Isn’t this exactly the sort of danger a young woman isn’t supposed to go out looking for? On the one hand, I trusted Daniel. On the other hand, why did I trust Daniel? I didn’t know him! How could I know him? He didn’t talk. This was insane.

I took a deep breath, then another, trying to slow down my racing heartbeat. I would be fine. The world isn’t the scary place of television cop shows and the network news. People go out and live their lives every day and all they see are the usual normal things. They live their normal lives. My normal life is that I’ve met a wolf boy. His normal life is a shack in the woods and the occasional visit from girls bearing junk food. That’s all there is to it. Normal.

The first snow of the season had been followed by a second snow and a third, so there was snow covering the clearing between the tunnel and the woods. So I made my way along the slope break to the other path Daniel had shown us. I looked back when I made it into the trees, but I didn’t see any cars or trucks on the road above. I didn’t see any movement anywhere except for a crow flying from one pine tree to another.

As I walked through the forest that afternoon, I realized that I hadn’t ever walked through woods in the winter.
